Thread: RIP Gene Elzy

    Default RIP Gene Elzy

I'm sorry that this post is so short on details, but I've learned that veteran Detroit broadcaster Gene Elzy died yesterday.

He did many things in his years on the air here, but I liked best his Saturday night show on WDET-FM, where he played, as he called it, "the jazzy side of blues and the bluesy side of jazz."

Vic, did he also work at WJR. I have memories of his voice. WJR. What did he do there.

    RIP.

Don't remember what he did there, but yes, he did work for WJR.

This has turned into a sad holiday weekend. Loved his radio program. I once heard someone call him the "Ernie Harwell" of jazz and blues. RIP

Music For Moderns on WJR a while back, as well. Great pipes, great knowledge.

Music for Moderns on WJR was part of my growing up. My Dad and his jazz friends always listened to it, and it formed a big part of my early music education. In addition to having expansive knowledge and great taste, Gene Elzy had one of the smoothest voices on Detroit radio. He will be missed. And this pretty much leaves Ed Love as the last man standing.
