Default Jack Ruby: the Detroit connection...

Curious if Jack Ruby's brother Earl got any mention in the Detroit media over the JFK/Oswald weekend. Earl Ruby once owned Cobo Cleaners on Livernois near the U. of Detroit campus.

Cobo Cleaners was changed to Ruby Cleaners around the time of the release of the "JFK" movie in 1993. This was also about the time that Earl Ruby won a lengthy legal battle for possession of the pistol that Jack shot Oswald with.

Anyone here ever have the acquaintance of Earl Ruby? Is the cleaners still open on Livernois?

I'm pretty sure that Bert Ruby, the wrestling promoter from about fifty years back, was a cousin of Jack and Earl.

There is one link that Detroit has to the JFK Assassination that gave me a shock a few years back. As a kid, I had been traumatized by the events that transpired back then in 1963. In 2000, we were visiting the Ford Museum in Dearborn and I was merrily walking along after seeing the Spirit of St. Louis hanging there and then came upon the black limousine in which Kennedy had been shot. I wasn't expecting that and stood there as an adult in shock with tears streaming down my cheeks. The car had survived but that great man had not.

Does anyone know whether Mr. [[Earl) Ruby is still living? Last I heard from him was he gave an interview to Jack Lessenberry, and that was a good many years back.

It was President Reagan who, while breaking the curse of the 20s, got off my favorite line from his, ever, as he was being wheeled toward an operating room after he had been shot. He told the men who were accompanying his gurney, "I sure hope you fellows are Republicans".

"Curse of the 20s", of course, is that every President elected in a year divisible by 20, from Wm. H. Harrison in 1840 through JFK in 1960, died while in office.

There might be an Earl Ruby Cleaners in Clawson, but the original Livernois Ave. location is still there and open for business.
