Ladies and gentlemen, we have a rendering. While it looks like pure guesswork to me, nothing more than scribbles and imagination, it is still a development to be very excited about. They did say that Dan Gilbert wants an LA Live type thing here, so it should be really cool!

to be honest this is nothing what it could look like... i think this is far from what it will eventually be... regardless with gilbert i'm excited for anything he has in store... he knows the city is in desperate need of attracting more retail and residential downtown.. and it looks like he's going to be addressing these head on...

i also guarantee he expands greektown into it.. whether it be the hotel or casino or whatever.. it will get bigger... puts the pressure on illitch that's for sure.. motor city casino is already in the worst location.. so he needs to put up the arena soon hopefully.. to at least draw people towards it that way

Gilbert is turning his bedrock ventures into 'OCP/Delta City'like town. It's going to make Illitch and Karmanos squirm! Gilbert has bought over 40 buildings in Downtown [[Gilbertown) Detroit, and turn them into to pop-up wonders for up and coming business companies in less than 2 years. More regional jobs and increase revenues along with people walking about. Coleman Young would be crying to say 'Finally that's the kind of development I like to see going on the downtown Detroit. I may don't like to many white folks hanging around, but they the backbone in the motor city.'

That's the sort of thing I could doodle. Where is this going to be located? it sounds similar to the Illitch arena district proposal

I think the reason Gilbert is making everyone else squirm is because he's setting a good example for a corporate citizen and property owner, while Illitch and several others [[Lookin' at you Matty) coasted by for years being complete slumlords and promising the world while delivering a small bag of stale dollar store oreos.

From what I've heard, his plan VERY MUCH includes the casino… not necessarily expanding into it, but perhaps even moving into it.

A development on the fail jail site is great for the casino. In addition to providing yet more people to pass by/into the casino, it also makes the walk from the stadiums a lot more lively. More people will park & visit before & after a game. Ilitch has the same idea with the arena and entertainment district; more people will be walking along Temple and Grand River. Oh, yeah! I forgot! Mrs. Ilitch happens to own a casino & hotel there! I'm excited for both.

I agree... but the Ilitch's have to fill in their "sea of gravel"... and I don't mean just behind and north of the Fox... but those 2 blocks across Woodward from it as well. One reason that the 2 restaurant spaces in the Fox Building have gone thru their 2nd and 3rd tenants is that during non-Fox or non-game days there's nothing to coaxe pedestrians that far north of the downtown area. Just too much of a sea of parking around the area... not exactly a pedestrian oasis.

I think that Dan Gilbert "gets it"... with his plans to tie Campus Martius with Monroe St. and Greektown/Greektown Casino... and up along St. Antoine towards Gratiot [[the current jail district).... a planned pedestrian zone to makes you want to walk around and enjoy the entertainments. Ilitchville has no such inducements... it's a long walk between destinations.

I agree wholly with your post, G. The problem with the Fox restaurant spaces is that they tempt the operators into crafting places that cater to the "big money" from wealthy patrons attending events at the Fox [[or to a lesser extent, the Fillmore or Hockeytown). But, in reality, that's what I call the "Nile River" theory of doing business, and it's flawed. The idea is that farmers along the nile rely on the occasional flood to sustain their irrigation system. Truth be told, good, everyday spots would thrive there, but that is not the kind of places that have been opened there. I would LOVE to put a restaurant in the Da Edouardo space. But I would gut that gaudy interior, and make it a good neighborhood place, not an "event" place. Don't get me started.

I almost took someone out to one of the restaurants at the Fox before a show once, but after looking up the prices, laughed and decided on something more reasonable. I think we ended up at Grand Trunk. I will totally agree with you guys here.

Gistok's prior comment is correct. Now with the rise of Woodward and Mack and the increased residential development proposed just north of Foxtown and the spin off that the happen in the area west to Grand River and east to the proposed jail area the foot traffic will definately increase. I see more foot traffic in the south of Mack, north of 75 stretch of Woodward today. But I agree with the price level at the Italian place in the Fox bldg is beyond absurd. We were going to go there prior to a Lion's preseason game chose to go to Ottava Via instead. That is the price point that needs to be in that area.
