Default Who the hell is running for mayor??

The primaries are less than a month away.

Who's running for anything? This has been an extremely quiet election season. 20 days until the primary.

The only real name running against Bing is Barrow. Everyone wants a new City Council. The question is, are there nine candidates out there that aren't going to give us more of the same? Too bad the candidates running for the Charter Commission aren't running for City Council. They're actually campaigning harder for a job that only pays about $30.00 per meeting. Janice Winfrey has been doing a good job as City Clerk. I can't remember who her main competition is.

About the only thing exciting would be Monica Conyers making it through the primary. And that kind of excitement we don't need.

City Water and Sewage worker D'Artagnan Collier:

"Human resources and engineering consultant" Duane Montgomery [[no active website that I could find, but this video statement):

    Oh, and Dave Bing:

In other words, it's a walkover for Bing.

An interesting common thread with these candidates seems to be tax problems, with Sanders and Montgomery both having trouble with the IRS, and Barrow having actually served time on federal tax charges.

Eastside Al, get your facts together before reporting on someones inappropriate actions or lack thereof.
In 1993, a federal jury found Barrow guilty of tax evasion and fraud, and he served 18 months in prison. But Tom did not stop fighting the Internal Revenue Service over matters stemming from his conviction, and he scored what many observers call an unusual victory in U.S. Tax Court. Judge Mark V. Holmes issued an opinion that supported Barrow's contentions that he was convicted because of lies and deliberate mistakes by the IRS.
On November 25, 2008, the United States Tax Court issued its decision in Thomas J. Barrow v IRS Commissioner, 14551-02, in which it held that it found no fraud on the part of Barrow or his accounting firm surrounding tax years 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989. While acknowledging that the civil tax court could not overturn his conviction directly, the tax court held that the United States government [[IRS) had made “startling” admissions which call into distinct question the validity of the conviction years of 1985, 1987 and 1988. In a direct rebuke, the court closed for any assessment the years for which Barrow had been wrongfully convicted, essentially validating the conviction’s falsity.
With the Tax Court opinion as ammunition, on December 17, 2007, Barrow filed a request with the United States District Court seeking to invalidate the convictions entirely based on the discovery of the agents’ deceit and the tax court admissions by IRS agents that they had plugged his records and had calculated false deficiencies. Tom currently awaits complete and final vindication from the District Court.

I thought we'd see some heavier hitters out for this election, since it's the full 4yr term. I thought we'd see Ken Cockrel Jr, Freeman Hendrix, Bella Marshal, etc. I guess they don't want to clean up any mess. BTW, does anyone other than Mildred Gaddis' audience think Bing's hiring Evans was such a bad move they won't vote for Bing?

Ummm, what I wrote was "Barrow having actually served time on federal tax charges" You write " In 1993, a federal jury found Barrow guilty of tax evasion and fraud, and he served 18 months in prison," which sure seems to confirm what I wrote. I made no judgment on his guilt or innocence on those charges. Except to say that he, like two of the other candidates, has had problems with the IRS, which seems indisputably true. So I'm not sure what your argument with me is, except to use my factual post as an opportunity to state Barrow's defense.

So are you, Cara Blount. Rule No. 1 of campaigning. Promote your campaign for office not someone else's.

Besides, at this point, Freman is looking more like Sharon McPhail. He just jumped into the easiest race for him to win. He didn't decide to run until the day before the filing deadline. At this point, he's probably more interested in receiving campaign donations for a possible run down the line.

You, Andy Linn, Jeff Hunt and some of the others, have a truer passion in bringing about a change in the way this city is ran.

    Kraig,

You're absolutely right, I need to do a better job of tooting my own horn and I'll fix that right now...I hope that those of you who vote will P.I.C.K. Cara Blount for the Detroit Charter Commission because I am Professional, Intelligent, Competent & Knowledgeable!

Kraig, I will break my self imposed hiatus from this forum to say this:
Your compliment means a lot to me, thank you very much.

All of the fresh new mayoral candidates for Detroit couldn't hold a political candle
against Bing. Fewer Detroiters only heard about these folks. Bing will win by a landslide both the primaries and General Election.

Detroit does need new leadership so here they are.

I find it ironic that the ONE time in years that Sharon McPhail did not run, she might have actually won.

Is this the future of Detroit? How many candidates have rap sheets?

It looks as if there is a huge readership on the, "Detroit Yes" blog. Why not step up and run for local office. One thing I noticed about Detroiters is, they want something to change [[a whole lot of things could change), but there is no action from the idea giver.

Me? Sorry, I live in CA. Last time I lived in Detroit was 1984.

And I am active in my community. We have city council members who have squandered the budget on city employees, police and fire employees to the tune of 110% of their salaries for their retirements!

The second quote just about describes 90% of this messageboard, except they may not live in Cali and more than likely they moved out of Detroit in the 60's. You're not going to find but 3 or 4 people on this site that would even be eligible to run.
