Default Local Restaurant Suggestions to Host a 20-25 Person Dinner - Within the 7.2 sq mile

    Had a friend ask the following;

"So, I'm in charge of finding a decent location for 4
Friday evenings [[Nov., Dec. & Jan.) to dine up to 25 candidates for our following years residents. We don't necessarily need upscale. We're looking for quaint, fun & somewhere to park. I'd like somewhere that maybe has a seperate room & not noisy. If you can shoot me some ideas, I'd truly appreciate it!"

Does anyone have any experience in hosting a party?

What 7.2 mile are you referring to? Are these med school people or are these City Residents? You leave a lot out of your request. For med school, I'd suggest Union Street as there would be not much of an issue with parking as it is near the school.

Traffic Jam has areas that can be separated, although I wouldn't expect it to be too quiet on a Friday night. I don't remember if Seva has a separate room. Union Street is certainly a reasonable idea too.

Or, for a different idea, the DIA is open late Fridays. Take them to Kresge Court. Are they med students who are tri-county residents [[so they can get in free?) That won't be noisy except possibly for some music.

Your choices within the 7.2 for a group that big are kind of limited. Roma Cafe and Mario's could accommodate your needs though. [[They both have inexpensive valet parking.) Outside of the 7.2 but inside the 138 you could go with the Dakota Inn or Vince's and get a separate room and parking.

Hey, I'm sure it took upwards of $1,000,000 worth of U-M degrees to think of that one.

Vivios in Eastern Market has a upstairs that is available and free parking out front.

Jacobys has an upstairs room or Sweetwater plenty of parking [[pay of course)

Then there's Meatcutters in the market with a large semi separate room it's a dive with character and around for forever, you know the wood bar, wood floors. Great burgers, onion rings, steaks excetra

I'd vote for Jabobys if you could reserve the upstairs. Good food, reasonable. prices. Great history and charm

Nah I went to Henry Ford, WC3D, Wayne State, and EMU. But at least I was smart enough to finish both undergrad and grad with no debt.

That is what the term 7.2 is going to sound like. It is contrived and non-descriptive.

Oh I didn't mean you, but the geniuses that thought of 7.2! A real brain trust, I'm sure. I went the bargain university route as well.

Is there something wrong with saying "Greater downtown" or "the greater downtown area" or something else that doesn't sound like those AOL trial CDs that used to come in the mail every day?

"the greater downtown area" just doesn't sound "with it", you know? I bet not one person in that crowd has washed their jeans in @ least 18 months!

I would have said Downtown Detroit, but wanted to include the neighboring areas without listing every single area. I just happened to read the 7.2 article recently.

This group usually takes their people to Novi, Royal Oak, etc. but the new person in charge would like to keep it in the city.

To be fair to you, the "7.2" designation is starting to catch on in everyday usage.

Polonia in Hamtramck has a great upstairs banquet hall and free parking.

Of course, it might be outside of the 7.2 [[which is an awful name for downtown).

I see the 7.2 as proof that Detroit is becoming two cities and less cohesive. It is the Star-belly Sneeches.

Like it or not, the city needs a tax base and, as part of that, all of the Sneeches it can get, Star-belly or regular.

Absolutely, but you never saw this in other cities that had gentrification. This is one of the chief reasons that urban hipsters are despised by life-long residents. Throw out everything that was part of the old cultural references erases the past.

Can't say that that's what I've seen in Chicago and Houston and, to a lesser extent, NY. Not particularly familiar with other cities, though.

Also, don't you think it's a bit of a false dichotomy to either say [[1) no gentrification or [[2) gentrification that "erases the past."

I've found that cultural references die with time, regardless, but that the hipsters here are actually probably preserving it more than allowing it to wane, what with their commoditization of the most esoteric Detroit-oriented shit. My dad and I have seen T-shirts and buttons and stuff where it's like "Damn, that bar shut down 20 years ago, where'd they find one of their softball team t-shirts" where, without the hipster economy, the bar [[or whatever) would be forgotten but for a few older heads like my dad that don't have more than a decade [[or a few decades) left, anyway.

But perhaps I'm missing your point. I see it the other way. I've found that Detroit and New Orleans hipsters tend to be less trustafarian and detached than their Brooklyn counterparts, and more down-to-earth and willing to interact with the life-long residents.
