Default former DPS school board candidate convicted of stealing $500K+ from DPS

I'm a little surprised nobody has mentioned this story from earlier in the week:

Former DPS accountant, teacher convicted in fraud scheme

Former DPS employees found guilty of fraud, money laundering

No mention of what the penalty is for this, or if they'll have to pay restitution. It's definitely not chump change. The accountant was previously mentioned here as a possible appointment to the Detroit Board of Education.

They were indicted for this over 18 months ago. There was a lot of indignation expressed at that time. No protests needed because they have no unchecked power over people's lives and were being brought to justice. If the courts said, "Never mind what they have done," then I imagine there would have been protests.

Interestingly, the mother was not an employee but a vendor providing accounting services to DPS via the company that she and her daughter, the teacher, owned. You accomplish theft like this when there are insufficient checks and balances. Hopefully, the person responsible for monitoring the accounting vendor was at least demoted.

The person responsible for accountability probably got some "free book samples" delivered to them.
