Default What has Dan Gilberts done for Cleveland

He owns the Cavaliers; right? So what ventures does he have going in Cleveland to lift that city up? All I've read coming out of Cleveland is mass rapes and killings. Not a good image.

I don't know, there might have been more if it weren't for him. But since LeBron left, the river is on fire.

I believe Gilbert has been active in CLE but has stated he doesn't feel any of the real enthusiasm that is present in Detroit [[I know that is hard to believe that other cities look longingly to Detroit for revival spirit).

That said, I have enough trouble keeping track of my former home [[Detroit) and my current home [[D.C. area) to adopt a 3rd home [[CLE). I can't point to what development has been done in downtown CLE by Gilbert.

I actually wish, and this is a pipe dream, Gilbert could sell the Cavs and buy the Pistons. [[IF Iltich had bought the Pistons he could have made a deal with Gilbert to sell the Cavs and for him, Gilbert, to buy the Pistons).

Gilbert could move the Pistons to Ilitch's arena and he would be 100% Detroit.

Gilbert owns the Cavaliers, the Lake Erie Monsters AHL hockey team, The Horseshoe Cleveland Casino, and also has a small Quicken Loans office in Cleveland. He's doing some similar things in Cleveland as far as trying to make it a walkable town, but nowhere near the level of Detroit.

It's clear to me that Gilbert considers Detroit his hometown and is making a stand here. Whatever he does to improve both cities is a plus.

What has Dan Gilbert done for Cleveland?

Dan Gilbert bankrolled state legislation to introduce casino gambling into Ohio [[on VERY favorable terms for Mr. Gilbert) sucking the money out of the pockets of Ohioans and depositing it into his bank account. He has occupied the historic and beloved Higbee's Department Store building [[see: "A Christmas Story") with his garish version of Las Vegas, had a historic building across the street bulldozed for valet parking, and is now fighting to construct a glass walkway over Ontario Avenue so that his poor widdle millionaires don't have to cross the street.

Yeah, I'd call it a massive raping, and Mr. Gilbert is indeed making a killing.

Has gilbert ever shown interest in the Michigan Central Station site? In his hands, it might actually get renovated..

And the chances of Matty Moroun selling that building are slim to none.

Other than create thousands of jobs with a Quicken Loans location and casinos, nothing.

But struggling urban cores don't need jobs, right?

Gilobert's successful efforts to locate his Horseshoe Casino in the formjer Higbee's building is a modest boost for downtown Cleveland and created some jobs there. It is very difficult to revive the downtown of an older city if there are no medical centers, major financial services employers or major research universities nearby. The major medical center in Cleveland is off to the east side and Western Reserve-Case is not a huge research universities. I think Cleveland has been less successful than Detroit in capitalizing upon the potential of its waterfront.
