Default Highland Park Adult Bookstore Joint Raided....

I guess all good things must come to an end......? How long has that joint been running? Long enough for the signage to be long faded upon the building. Course that kind of place does not pull customers from bright neon lights and paint.

Adult bookstore raided in Highland Park, investigated for prostitution and illegal sex acts

Is this the same place where that guy won that $128 Million dollar Powerball Jackpot at the walk-up window.

No that place is across the street, midway of the block. Share the same building as the Dejavu strip joint on the corner.

Yes Zacha341, the $128 million dollar PowerBall ticket was purchased at the Uptown Bookstore outside window, which is across Woodward and just a bit north at 6 Mile. WWN was closed after a six month investagation? REALLY! Just driving by one knew what was going on in there. I'm guessing the owner[[s)[[?) must have done something to piss off someone in the HPPD.

I don't think the issue is so much that "one knew what was going on in there" as making sure your evidence has all it's ducks in a row and the bust sticks in court. It could also be that if other activities were going on, let's say drug sales for instance, the HPPD might have wanted to follow some leads to see where they went.

That place was raided on Thursday morning, and it's been all over the news ever since.

When i first saw the SWAT team come strolling out in full uniform with fully automatic rifles, grenades, and boxes of crap, I thought drugs, kiddie porn, something serious that would justify the expense and necessity of sending effin SWAT into a nudiemag store. Then i heard " illegal sex acts."

    Really?

I mean, assuming they weren't holding sex slaves [[which deserves the SWAT), wouldn't it have been just as effective to send a couple of detectives in there with a warrant to arrest the manager, or better yet, deliver warrants for the actual owners [[who live out of state) without all of the drama and bullshit. Maybe snap up the johns [[most of which were suburbanites on their way to work, but you knew that already).

And the local news just ate this story up, with it's descriptions of whips and chains, sex "paraphernalia" [[?????). Sounds like Bob Bashara all over again...

I don't know about you guys, maybe I'm the only one waving my libertarian flag around, but I don't give two capital F's what consenting adults do behind closed doors. Not enough to send a militarized police unit in anyway. And funny how that place had been running this operation for DECADES without a peep, everyone in town knew about it, yet when Magic Money Johnson and Meijer's come to town, and the M1 dollars start to get thrown around, now it's time to send in a SWAT team. Every single day, you can ride down John R by 8 mile and State Fair, and see half a dozen sex acts in broad daylight, children walking by as they exit the partystore, and the police ride right on by. Then stop me or my boyfriend for being white in the wrong neighborhood.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees through this dummy stuff.

was the adult book store on the corner before dejavu moved in ?
just thought it was a book store.

sex "paraphernalia" = condoms / dildos. cant say dildo on tv, someone may get offended!

yeah i agree prostitution should be legal. otherwise you're creating a black market and all the trouble that comes with an illegality [[guns, gangs, mafia, cartels, slavery, etc). also swat probably doesnt have to be used half of the time its used for non-violent crimes like this.

oh. wasnt there a candy store in the same building too ? cant remember if its still there.

Thank you all for answering my main question, which is "why now?" It's not like anyone didn't know what has been going on in that place for years. I hate these stupid police and political grandstand plays against consensual "crimes," really hate the militarization of our police forces that turns a simple prostitution and drug arrests into a massive freaking SWAT "operation," and, more than anything, hate the way our idiotic local media just laps it all up without question.

I wonder if surrounding business's felt that this one in particular was a detriment to their success?

It is not uncommon for cities to create a certain area of zoning where they are allowed ,if somebody is trying to clean up an area the first thing they go after is the bookstores and strip clubs, sometimes compromising with a sledge hammer is not always the best solution.

Police must have been afraid that everyone was going to pull out their piece.

At one point there was even a middle-east olive, feta cheese and produce market in the dejavu strip, dejavu being a relatively recent incarnation to the area. Over the years there were offices spaces leased to various business including one of my family members who operated a licensed contracting company there in the early - mid eighties.

That 'um, bookstore was always there. Same dingy faded sign, same look four at least four decades! Someone pushed a button for the sudden notice.... and action.

In that area alot as I have family living nearby and I know the church on the next corner lobbied complaints against the bookstore. The peep-show theater [[whatever it was called) down the road, the other side of the street eventually closed and purchased by another church about 20 years ago.

Many, many years ago that space was a Robert Hall men's store. I had a suit from there when I was about 11 or 12.
