Default The History of Utica, Michigan

The History of Utica, Michigan is again available: The History of Utica, Michigan
"It's a real history book, so it talks about people and families and organizations and activities," Utica Mayor Jacqueline Noonan said. "It includes Sterling Heights and Shelby Township people because Utica was a focal point of those areas - the residents in Sterling Township and Shelby Township got their mail from the city of Utica. It also makes mention of the two large churches, Trinity Lutheran and St. Lawrence, and the parades - all the things that people growing up here over the years would remember...."

"I think it's a treasure, because it's like the line from 'The Grapes of Wrath,'" Noonan said. "'How will we know who we are without knowing where we came from, and how can we plan where we're going without our history?'"
The Utica Heritage Association announces a reprint of The History of Utica, Michigan written by Naomi Gibbing and Gloria Olman. This book was published in 2010 and sold out in less than two years. It is hardbound with 288 pages, 15 chapters, and an index. Books may be purchased at Utica City Hall and the following businesses on Van Dyke: Ace Hardware, Steve's Café, and Utica Florist. The cost is $35 including tax. The books can be sh[i]pped for an additional $6 per book. For more information, call Pat Hallman at 586-781-2963 or email uticaheritage@gmail .com.
It's a small town so City Hall can't crack a Bennie — but it's well worth the price, so bring exact change: $35, with quarters.

Funny that, due their being such the pains-in-the-asses who delayed the completion of M-59 for so many years, I never considered history before then!

Gannon, The hinderance of M-59, was done by one Mayor Beck. He had all the power in Utica for years. The highway depts. plans called for M-59, to run dead center in the small city of Utica, which would have destroyed the city of Utica, and the end of his Mayorship. He made other blunders too. We had the Historic Clinton/Kalamazoo canal, running through the center of the city. It would have been a Historical highlight, and been a revenue maker. He had it filled in, and now it's a parking lot.
