    Default Benny Napoleon Announces Candidacy

    http://www.freep.com/article/2013032...t-s-next-mayor

I'm surprised this wasn't posted already. It looks like this will be a competitive mayoral race even with the EFM.

ND...There's a reason why no one posted Benny Napoleon's announcement on this board....A lot of folks thinks that the Great White Hope, Duggan, will save Detroit from going down in smokes!

I think Napoleon would do a far worse job than Duggan and that's about my main consideration at this point; who will fuck us up the least, lol. Besides, I'm not sure I can vote anyways - does Benny consider Woodbridge to be Detroit? Palmer Woods isn't, but we're a little rougher around the edges so we may count.

Why? because he's another black candidate that might continue to pilfer the city? White people commit crimes too, in case you've forgot. They just do a better job of not getting caught in most circumstances.

Me personally because he's already slipping into the usual pandering of "Real Detroit" with the "Palmer Woods is not Detroit" line. Need some new thinking and Benny has proven to me that he is not it.

Not saying Duggan is...but at least his message is one of unification [[obviously, lol).

Little early in the morning and the race to be dropping the race card isn't it?

I don't see why someone that has no clue of Detroit's city limits should even consider running for mayor. If he honestly thinks that Palmer Woods is not Detroit then he doesn't have a clue to begin with. Palmer Woods doesn't even border the city limits and lies south of 8 Mile along Woodward and 7 Mile but yet it's not Detroit. This is where it's ok to laugh at someone with that stupidity level.

Usually after someone asks "why?" they wait for the OP to reply, and not answer for them.

Having an EFM only makes the mayoral race more important. What happens after the EFM is what's really important.

Detroit's mayoral, legislative, and administrative problems need strong leadership.

I think he's a good guy. Crossed paths years ago. From knowing him and from what I've heard in his interviews I don't think he's the solution.

Oh he knows where it is. His point was that Palmer Woods is too nice to be "real Detroit."

Look, the first time I ventured to Detroit, it was honestly to satisfy my morbid curiosity. All I had ever known of Detroit, as a Texan-turned-Chicagoan, was from ruin porn photos. So I get here while I'm visiting Ann Arbor for a UM game and imagine my surprise that, "Hey, there are some nice things about this city!" And the more times I visited, the more I liked it. So the narrative that all of Detroit is shitty burned out buildings [[to the point that nice areas actually in Detroit are no longer considered Detroit) is not one that I'd like my next mayor to adopt. Shame on Benny for that.

Palmer Woods experience far different than average Detroiter’s
From Benny's twitter account. I'll agree that the wealthiest of Detroiters do not have to deal with some stuff that other Detroiters do, mainly the security issue. But they do still put up with a lot of the same crap. And anyways, you must recognize that your city is all of its inhabitants. There's no such thing as an "average Detroiter."

Not dropping the race card, I was responding to him being "suspicious" of Napoleon and not Duggan, or anyone else for that matter. You can draw your own conclusions.

I'm not the one ascribing racist intent to the suggestion one be "wary" of Napoleon. You are. Duggan was not the suject of the thread...Napolean's announcement is. Is there no reason to ever be wary of a black politician other than a racist one?

He said he's wary of Napoleon, I had a rebuttal, now it's his serve. I'm using proper etiquette.

I was responding to Big Dog's post, not yours. You just decided to chime in, with YOUR opinion in which you are entitled to.

This is why, and no you're not. No one's denying this, and white people absolutely do it too. Don't get your Jockey's in a bunch until you find out what he means. And if THAT'S what he means, you'll look like a hero.

You replied by calling him a racist. You're entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.

The recent appointment of an EFM may actually help Napoleon. Many residents feel disenfranchised and they are looking for a charismatic candidate that speaks to them. He can capitalize on this by focusing on the problems that affect the personal lives of citizens such as crime, unemployment, and schools. His history as a former police chief will help him with the crime part. Duggan has his strengths as well. His record with the DMC shows his ability to get things done, which many residents are looking for.

I think downtown development will be less of a focus in this campaign. What's really hurting Detroit is the quality of the neighborhoods. The candidate that can best address this will be the best choice for the city.

Benny is a so so second banana. Average as a sheriff at his best. As mayor, I think he will line the city with family and friends.

I'm surprised no one mentioned who was standing right behind Benny when he made his announcement...Sharon McFail!!! She had a smile on her that reminded me of Howdy Dowdy. She's a political vampire who never dies. Good grief.

Sharon McFail is one of those negative indicators that help you cut right to the chase. If she's in, I'm out.
