Default Should Gov. Snyder try to woo gun manufacturers to Michigan?

The changing gun control climate in some states has gun manufacturers based there considering a move. Colt in CT and Magpull in CO are two recent examples. Understanding the controversial nature of the topic, does the economic benefits trump the negatives? Keep in mind more people die from auto accidents each year than gun shots!

Well, why not? And every other political power buying profiteering at the expense of common sense company you can think of along with them. Our Michigan legislature needs more money in its claws to vote against our interests, won't it be just DUCKY?

Due to the auto supply base, the technologies and skills that support the manufacture of guns - such as forging, precision machining, die- and sand-casting, metal finishing, and the like are all found in Detroit, probably in a greater concentration than anywhere else in the country.

The subject prompted me to do a check on gun fatalities in America and I found that in 2011 there were 32,000 [[of which surprisingly 20,000 were suicide); also in 2011 there were 34,500 vehicle fatalities. In 2004 [[couldn't find 2011) there were 195,000 Medical malpractice fatalities. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/11856.php
I wouldn't go out of my way to solicit Gun Manufacturers to move to Michigan but neither would I put obstacles in their way if it was their intent. We have the quality of workers needed, and guns will be made somewhere even if it's offshore. And lets face it we build vehicles and we have our fair share of doctors/surgeons.
Come to think about it, I'm not going to commit suicide, so I'll take my 1 to 19 chances of being shot compared to finding myself under a surgeons knife.

Not true in Colorado. More people die from guns than auto accidents in Colorado.

Let me know the next time someone runs over a bunch of innocent people in a movie theatre with his car, will you?

And what percentage of the people shot in Detroit in any given year were shot in "the normal course of business" as opposed to a serial killing?

I wasn't trying to justify anything; just merely addressing the fact that, on a national level, more people die from auto accidents. Not sure the manner in which they died is relevant - dead is dead. Ask their family if they feel comforted because their love one died in an auto accident when traveling to work. Also, wasn't Detroit considered the "Arsenal of Democracy" when it was pumping out military weapons during WWII? I'm sure a "few" innocent lives were taken during a carpet bombing by a B-2 bomber built at Willow Run, but I digress.

Of course he should. The firearms industry is a legitimate business that makes a legal and useful product. The Metro Detroit region would be an ideal location for many of these manufacturers and is already home to dozens of factories producing firearms, firearms accessories and parts for firearms. These are factories producing American made goods and providing jobs for American workers.

Before you go off half-cocked, [[pun intended), my reply wasn't aimed @ you, [[I crack myself up), specifically, as it was @ the statement " more people die from auto accidents each year than gun shots!" If even MORE guns were available and used more frequently to match the number of "autos" and the frequency with which they're used, I'm sure that ratio would change dramatically. I have friends that range from gun owners, [[I myself am one), to avid gun collectors, to staunch, die-hard NRA members. I've had this discussion SO many times, I DON'T care to have it again. I don't think guns should be taken away, I do think "when guns are outlawed, outlaws will have guns", but I also feel there needs to be more serious regulation and control, just like buying automobiles and being issued drivers licenses, then their currently is. Again, I can't conceal an automobile, bring it into a classroom, and waste 35 people. NOW, that we're done with that, YES, Snyder SHOULD make every effort to locate gun manufacturing here in MI. This area, back in the day, used to be the pinnacle of engineering excellence, and I'm there is enough know how and skill left, to produce a first-class product. The manufacturers themselves though, should make every effort to provide a safe, secure environment, so that there isn't a repeat of Fast & Furious, where weapons are stolen and released unaccounted for into the general public.

Point #2: I too have lost friends and family to both gun violence and automobile accidents, I know intimently what it's like to feel the pain and grief of loss, so please don't take my post out of context and rub my nose in it. Ok? Thanx.

Maybe the state should consider offering a MEGA grant to a gun manufacturers if they partner with law enforcement to create work-release jobs for felons? "I used to steal guns and kill people, now I build them and make a killing."

On the entrepreneurial start-up end DIY gun-making is getting ready to take off with the advent of 3D printing. The CAD files for the parts are online now. Better yet they can be made in non-metallic materials. Who knows, maybe some budding Henry Ford is hard at work in his urban prairie garage as we write.

I wish it would all go away and end, but it won't by any stretch of the imagination. This reminds me of the casino issue back in the day. Once Windsor opened the bottle and let the genie out, the question became whether to let the money continue flowing to CA, or to keep it here in the States, in MI, in Detroit. To me, this is the same conundrum. Somebody is going to make these things somewhere, so why not here? And I'm sure we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg with 3D printing and your described scenario. Eienstein was so bummed they made a bomb with his equation.

I think more people dieing from guns than auto accidents in Colorado has to do with different gun laws in Colorado like the Castle Law. In Colorado, you are allow to use deadly force against someone who made unlawful entry into your property.

    http://jeffco.us/jeffco/sheriff_uplo...d_statutes.htm :
18-1-704.5. Use of deadly physical force against an intruder.

    1. The general assembly hereby recognizes that the citizens of Colorado have a right to expect absolute safety within their own homes.
    2. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 18-1-704, any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant.
    3. Any occupant of a dwelling using physical force, including deadly physical force, in accordance with the provisions of subsection [[2) of this section shall be immune from criminal prosecution for the use of such force.
    4. Any occupant of a dwelling using physical force, including deadly physical force, in accordance with the provisions of subsection [[2) of this section shall be immune from any civil liability for injuries or death resulting from the use of such force.
BTW, Ontario has several gun manufacturers including Colt Canada for use in Canada and export to Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands.

POSITIVELY! The less cars there are, the less apprehensive people are about walking. See Post #7 about the guy that murdered people with his car.

i've actually thought for a long time that MI should have a gun manufacturer, as well as a motorcycle manufacturer. like, one to compete with Harley. because SOME of us arent rich.

i had the idea of starting up a gun / motorcycle company, but i am just an idea man, not a business man. my guess [[judging by this Shinola thing, and most other MI-made products), is that these guns [[or motorcycles) would cost a friggin fortune.

If they're manufactured in Detroit, I hope they take YOBS advice and have the WSU Police respond to burglar alarms.
