    Default Disingenuous Defined

Just saw a spot on TV telling us that "the credit card companies are here to help" those who are having difficulty paying their balances.
    It brought a snicker.
I thought it would be an appropriate entry in this thread. Other examples might be: "Yes, I'll still respect you in the morning", or "Trust me."
    Any more contributions?

I know, I saw similar ads here in Florida- BofA dragging out 20somethings to tell me "they feel my pain" and how we're here to help. Yeah, by starting new fees on DEBIT card transactions, refusing to lend money to those with great credit, etc.

The old reliables "The check's in the mail" & "I'm from the government & I'm here to help you." immediately come to mind. Oh, and the notorious "I promise not to...in your mouth."
The "respect you in the morning" always makes me think of a different reply: "Respect you in the morning? I don't respect you now."
When I did network support & we had contractors come in to do some work, their catch phrases were "It'll be seamless & transparent" plus "It must be your network because it's never done this before."

OT - Lorax, you have a msg waiting, plus I hit you up with a question on the "connections" page. So get on it!

    Great thread topic!

Salespeople, especially those on commission, sometimes are rightfully considered disingenuous in carrying out their sales duties. I look up the chain though, and consider the conditions and pressures cast upon them from upper management. In general I do try to resist prejudging the motives of others.

I'm in software, so intentionally sending out bug-filled software without appropriate disclosure is my biggest professional beef. There are so many examples of this because this is a systemic practice in many cases.

    Here are a couple:

    • when Ryan Seacrest on American Idol abruptly takes you to a commercial break after having you on the edge of your seat about who is going home or has won
    • when the package price of a consumer good is advertised as being reduced, but the volume or quantity is discretely reduced as well
    • when a TV movie is spread across two or more days, but they never really tell you ahead of time that you'll have to tune back in tomorrow or next week for the rest of the story.

Rationally, of course the credit card companies want to help people pay...what is the alternative? Not paying.

    LOL!!!

I guess you've never dealt with a credit card company.

They practice nothing but crass economic fascism.

They want people to pay on their terms, even when they change the interest, rules, without notice.

Try mailing in your light bill, it shows up late, or not at all- your CC company notices this on your credit report, then raises your card rate to 27%! Some have reported 41%!

What right do companies have in monitoring people's credit rating? When did this happen? Under the Rethuglican fascists Tush/Cheney/Gramm. Since when does a late payment on your gas bill, light bill, car payment, effect your revolving credit card rate? It's usury, it's illegal, and it's allowed.

CUT UP THE CREDIT CARDS PEOPLE!

Yeah, CC companies are really willing to work with you.

What rock have you been living under lately?

This jumped out at me because my agency has an Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft. We always swore we were a "beta site" whenever they'd release something new, because users would suddenly have problems with programs not running properly or getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.
"It'll be transparent & seamless to the user community"...yeah, right!
And don't forget "Case Studies" where a contractor installed their gadget on what basically amounts to a sterile network with just the basic services.

True, they do want you to pay. However, they are not "here to help you" pay. They are here to make money off of interest and fees. That is their primary role in life.

When a fireman arrives at your burning house, he is there to help you. Not there to first let it burn for a while and then grudgingly help put out the fire when the flames are almost gone.

Lorax, if they aren't able to get the person in debt to pay something, what do they accomplish? They rationally must have an interest in accomplishing this not for the benefit of the person in debt, but out of self interest. It is called logic.

    "It is called logic."

Maybe to the bank, not to any sane individual.

After paying {writing the checks} to two credit card companies earlier tonight, I myself am thinking of taking out a loan from my credit union to pay off these folks.
I look at my balances and say I am ok with that, But then come the % rate hikes and it is ok " eye for an eye".

I hear a commercial on a Chicago radio station for one of those payday loan companies. It's pretty comical, they have a catchy little jingle sing "take charge of your life" and then proceed to tell you how you can do all kinds of things with a loan from them. Then they finish the jingle with the line "we're there when you need us, so take charge of your life.

Yeah, thats really taking responsible charge by taking out a loan with an exuberant interest rate.

It is an innocuous advertisement. The person choosing to make bad judgements is the responsible party, not the inane tv or radio spot.

    Disingenuous?
Just watched Dick Cheney's speech, delivered in mid May, on the DVR:
"...on our watch, after 9/11, we were not hit by the terrorists..."
    WTF?

Using any of those payday loan shark franchises is the refuge of last resort for some folks, I feel sorry for them.

There is no truth in advertising anymore, thanks to the Rethuglicans. Just look to Faux News as the best glaring example.

Lorax, I agree. If the lending institutions can't make loans to these people at 20% or less because there's close to zero chance in hell of their ever getting paid back, they shouldn't make it. These guys need to be forced into bankruptcy much earlier on so the cars they can't afford can be sold in better condition, the houses they can't afford won't all have to be repossessed at once, and the pile of unpaid bills the rest of us are left to cover will be less. You are absolutely correct. These people shouldn't be offered these last resorts.

    Agreed.

It's a shadow banking industry, rather like Paypal, which I know we've all discussed here before.

The system has been allowed to be corrupted, so really, all bets are off that we'll have an economic recovery anytime soon.

I nominate the following as the ultimate in incredulous relationship promises, from Babyface's 1989 hit "Soon as I Get Home" that had women swooning:

    I give good love
    I'll buy your clothes
    I'll cook your dinner too
Soon as I get home from work
    I'll pay your rent
    Your faithful lover
Soon as I get home, soon as I get home from work
    Girl, I'll treat you right
And I'll never lie or flirt
Soon as I get home, soon as I get home from work
Girl I'll be around, never let you down
    For all that it's worth
I give good love [[good love, good love, good love, good love)
I give good love [[good love, good love, good love, good love)

The guy who promises all of this is either deceitful or delirious.

Why would you expect all that from a man? I'll never understand it, women want equality, but they want to be treated like a lady. i.e. Have their doors opened, be taken care of, pampered etc. Pick one or the other, ya can't have both. Be careful what you ask for.

When banks deny you because you're homeless and have no address, where do you cash your Social Security check? Medicare disability?

Or, if you live in the "wrong" neighborhood, don't drive, and the nearest mainstream bank is miles away- where do you go?

    The payday loan store.

You pay the price from the gouging sharks at payday loan stores.

Use that argument when you have to choose which emergency room to go to, or had your house crumble in an earthquake, guess you made a bad choice of where to live.

    Choose wisely.

Ok. Lorax, don't go over board now. Have yahoo map show you banks in Detroit and you'll get over 400 hits.

But, on a related note, how do homeless people get medicaid or social security checks? Do any missions act as a free address for them?
