Best Subs in the city [[ok, region)

Ok -- My parents were Eastsiders and we always ordered out Buscemi's subs when I was growing up. But I live in SW now and I have to say that the Gonella's subs are the absolute best, hands down. Any other sub joints out there worth checking out?

Which Gonella's. Detroit or Dearborn?

Dearborn Sausage in East Dearborn are really good as is Alcomo's on Schafer in Dearborn.

Ventimiglia's are awesome for Italian subs. If you want a great steak hoagie, Try Gabriel's. They have three locations. The original on Michigan Ave in Ypsi, one on Wayne Rd near Ford in Westland and one in Saline. Make sure to get the peppers

I need to check some of these places out. When I get subs it's pretty generic: Subway or Papa Romano's steak & cheese subs [[which I actually think are pretty good).

Gonella's on Oakwood in Detroit, just west of the drawbridge on Fort street over the Rouge river.

Originally a Lansing company, Jersey Giant makes some of the greatest sandwiches I have ever had. They are simple but absolutely incredible. The secret is in the bread and the vinegar/oil combination which their owner once told me "has kept us in business" for 30 years.

Their only "Detroit" location is 23112 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven. I would say it is worth the drive from just about anywhere though. I used to drive from Detroit to Lansing for "The Boss."

I have nothing to contribute, except to say that this thread is making me hungry in the middle of the night.

Oh, and that I'm glad to see Jersey Giant doing well. I was there the day Ken Slocum opened the place in the back of a temporary 'mini-mall' built in a vacant department store in East Lansing. A Jersey Giant with hot peppers for me!

And while it's not exactly a classic "sub", I love the banh mi at Que Huong on John R in Madison Heights.

Gonella's! Maybe a trip to the westside is in order soon...

Thanks for the tip on Jersey Giant. I drive by there all the time and always wondered about it. I'll check it out now for sure. The Gonellas on Outer Drive in Dearborn is run by the son of the orginal family. They sold the location on Oakwood years ago.

While definitely not the BEST subs in town, Dan's Subs in Farmington was always pretty good when I was growing up. Haven't been there in years..is it still open?

DiBellas in Auburn Hill and Ann Arbor is really good. An east-coast chain with a signature sub called "the godfather".

I'll also cast another vote for Ventimiglias. Their italian on a hard roll [[ALWAYS take the hard roll) with peppers is to die for.

Made a huge mistake of going to Jimmy Johns for the first time. I walk in the place and I hear a chorus of hellos and welcome. They had 9 employees all standing around and I am the only one in the place at 12:15. I order a simple # whatever with cheese and mustard instead of mayo. Get back to work and its no mustard and no cheese. How does this place stay open?

Nona's on Harper in Harper Woods makes a pretty good sub. Not quite as good as Gonaella's but its closer to home for me and they will deliver.

Ventimiglia has the best subs in the area, hands down. They used to be on 8 Mile Road on the Detroit side and moved to Sterling Heights in the late 80s. I always visit the place when I am in town...the chicken cutlet is amazing, as is the Italian.

That is rare at most of their locations. Most locations have your order ready before you've had a chance to pay, and always correct, in my experience. Used to get their sandwiches a lot when traveling for work.

I live pretty close to that place. I have had them there and once at the Lansing location. The bread is pretty darn yummy but they meats/cheese leave something to be desired.

Pretty much the same.

I've heard that Sylvia's Subs in Allen Park is pretty good. I've not had them before though.

Haven't been there in a few years, but from what I remember when working down there was that you really didn't have much of a choice of subs. You were getting Italian. Your choice was the amount of meat and cheese on it, from the $3.50 sub to the $8.00 monster, all the same length, though. Awesome.

Nino's in Walled Lake used to have wonderful subs, but I haven't been there in awhile. They used to be on Schoolcraft between Greenfield and Southfield. Cannolis are the best, and they also have really good pepperoni loaves.
