Looking at the weather report...now I'll have to hear all day about 'God loving the Irish', when indeed it is more like He enjoys watching drunken cavorting ushering in Springtime properly. He just put the Irish in charge of the assembly for the day.

The parade is always the Sunday before St Patrick's Day, supposedly to allow the pubs an additional day of revenue.

As far as the fireworks go, it's an American-Canadian joint, celebrating the "Freedom Festival" between the two countries. Canada celebrates "Canada Day" on July 1st, America celebrates "Independance Day" on July 4th. The fireworks are on a compromised date between the two Holidays.

We did the same in Chicago. The week before is the South Side parade. The next weekend, the one closer to actual St Pattys, is the downtown celebration.

Now we have the Detroit Riverfront Days in the later part of June, and the Parade Company piggybacks the annual fireworks event on the Monday following the close of that event, usually the 4th Monday of June.
