Default City Airport Control Tower Axed

Detroit — The Federal Aviation Administration has announced it will close the control tower at Detroit's Coleman A. Young International Airport one month from today.

Known by many as Detroit City Airport, the shutdown is one of 150 small airport tower closures due to go into effect by April 7.

The closures, announced by the FAA on Tuesday, are due to the automatic federal sequestering cuts that went into effect on March 1.

But the closure of the airport tower — which handles only about 50 flights a day — doesn't mean the end of service.

In situations when there is no control tower, or the tower is understaffed, pilots coordinate their arrivals and departures with each other.

I didn't even know people still used that airport. Wasn't there a plan back in the early 90's to expand the airport for SouthWest? Didn't they start clearing the land towards Van Dyke to expand?

Coleman A. Young International Airport? That's a stretch.

The city bought up tons of property and still owns a lot of it is my understanding but there still wasn't enough room to expand the runway. Total failure on the City's part.

The neighborhood is essentially bounded between Van Dyke, Harper, Lynch, and Gratiot.

And the effects of sequestration begin....

It's where all those small aircraft that fly use your city as an ascending and descending point start from or end up at...

As for the history... this should bring you up to speed...

There was some scheduled flight from this airport within recent times.
I recall that after the September 2001 events, the FAA ruled that the
airport could not be used by commercial airlines. Is this the type of
property that an EFM could sell to benefit the city?

Default Detroit City Airport as I remember it

I learned to fly here in 1943. I then joined a group of ten engineers from Packard Motor Car Co. in the ownership of a Taylorcraft airplane.

Since 2008, the FAA's budget has increased about 30%, which is much faster than inflation. With all the consolidation the overall number of flights has decreased by 10%.

So where's all that money going?

Does airport security fall under FAA or is that Homeland Security, and a seperate entity?

Yeah, never mind those pesky pension obligations or public safety costs.
