Default Bing stands up an award ceremony he was to deliver opening message.

    His deputy filled in.

Curbing my dislike for the guy.

If he's ill he needs to let the public know, so they can make decisions based on that fact.

Not personal it only seems fair to me.

I wonder what E. Olmos's take is on the stuff going on in Detroit...

Way too much pride [[arrogance), not enough class.

In Australia the mayor is just a puppet position, to cut ribbons at building openings etc no one takes them serious, they do the gig just for the money

Seems a lot more formal in USA

For mine once a mayor has had a turn, done nothing or little, should be booted and never allowed to run again.

My advice, for what its worth, get a interstate guy/gal to do the gig, a proven performer, maybe from NY, Texas or CA., say NO to excuse people!

    Cheers

Everyone wants the Mayor at his event, funeral, church party, neighborhood party. When you invite the Mayor - any Mayor- there's a first-line standard reply: "It's on his calendar." That means not too much. Every week or few days, the Mayor and his staff go over all the things on his calendar, the choices, as it were, and decide which ones are most important.
The Urban Wheels people are actually turned down by a lot of people: not too many Detroit voters there, for example. It's one of those things that expect the family & friends of the honorees to buy expensive tickets to fill the coffers of the group. And what wonderful work does this group do in our community , ask yourself, to demand/expect the Mayor to be there and people to buy expensive tickets?
It's kind of a make-work group and maybe there was something more compelling that he needed to be at. Again, ask yourselves what is important to Detroit about this organization before you criticize Bing's decision to send his deputy.

Of course, because there are so many other things we can criticize Bing for.

What is Bing suppose to do? Look at this clusterfuck of a city he inherited. The bitching will transfer to whatever sacrificial lamb takes over this mess.

For the record, no one forced Bing to run for mayor.
