Default Awrey Bakery closing for good

Looks like Awrey is closing for good. Didn't they just celebrate their 100th anniversary? Wonder what happened....

Just over two years after Livonia-based Awrey Bakeries LLC celebrated its 100th anniversary, it appears the bakery is set sell assets in an online auction beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 and ending the next day.

The website rabin.com has a preliminary list of Awrey assets. It includes dozens of pieces of baking equipment, including 340-quart mixers, 15,000-pound flour hoppers and 100-gallon cooling pans.

Awrey Bakery and Mills Bakery used to sell from trucks driving through the neighborhood ringing a bell. You just stuck your head out the door and waved and the driver would stop, jump off the truck, and come up to your door schlepping a six cubic foot metal basket of goodies for you to select from. My parents had a weakness for their cinnamon loaf [[which separated into 12 individual portions. Sunday morning breakfast usually included the cinnamon rolls purchased during the Friday drive on the part of the delivery man. Mills original bakery got torn down to build the Lodge.

Bye bye Awrey windmill cookies. My grandmother always had a plate of them out for Sunday dinners at the old house on Chalmers.

They have been struggling the last few years and even were threatening to close before Thanksgiving. Must stock up!
