Default New US Navy vessel to be named after Detroit...

correct me if im wrong, but i thought only the eastern portion of the Yoopee was awarded to the Michigan Territory in 1835, Carl...

I am honored because this ship will be the product of workers from two great states. Now, forgive me if I’m a little partial to Michigan here. If you know the history of the U.P., you know that in 1835, Michigan was shrewd enough to acquire Menominee and the rest of the Western U.P. from the Wisconsin Territory. “Acquire” might not quite be the right term – basically, we stole it, but we stole it fair and square.
...and that the western Yoopee containing the city of Menominee was not granted to MI until later.

not to mention that the "Toledo War" award was in disregard of any Native American claims that still applied to the Yoopee by treaty, if im not mistaken?

Of the last two ships named Detroit one served well, one seemed to be a little accident prone. CL-8 escaped Pearl Harbor unscathed and was present in Tokyo Bay for the surrender signing.

It will probably be manned by Capt. Jack Sparrow and his crew of scurvy wharf rats.

The USS Detroit will be a Freedom class littoral combat ship. The ships are designed to operate in a coastal environment. They can launch helicopters, unmanned vehicles, and missiles, and can carry a small assault force with armored vehicles, among other things.

I wish it was an Independence class ship just because they look so damn cool.

Are the littoral class ship sort of in the same role as the old PT boats

No, these are much larger vessels with a broader mission.

littoral means coastal... whereas a PT boat is a riverine fighting ship...on the rivers only...

That may have been the original intention, but during WWII the PT Boats were used extensively in non-river environments, such as in the waters near Guadalcanal.

OK... you're wrong... only the western 2/3 of the UP was awarded to Michigan as a result of the 1835 war.... I believe the Michigan Territory already had the eastern 1/3 of the UP.

Also in the 19th century the US government respected native American claims.... oh I don't know... about zero times!!

USS Detroit AOE-4 was a great ship I had many friends serve aboard her throughout the 80s and 90s. For more information please follow up with this link, http://www.ussdetroit.org/index.html . A Yahoo Image search of USS DETROIT provides some great images. When I retired from the Navy in 1999 I requested and received a "Battle Ensign", flown aboard the Detroit on 1 Sept 1999. Forever cherished. Photo Memorial Day 2002. Sorry had to blank out our good looks as a special request...Name: Memorial Day1.jpg
