If you're shopping in Mid-town today check out my friends at Dell Pryor Gallery and Tulani Rose [[mother & daughter) on the corner of Cass & Willis. If you need a great haircut, manicure, hair do, etc, etc, stop by at Curl Up & Dye right around the corner from Dell Pryor ask for Melissa...she is the BOMB!!!

Yes I could but I have enough to deal with now. The one area of the city that has been completely left out of the discussion, but is the only place where commerce is happening in Detroit is West Vernor and the surrounding streets. Quite a few speciality shops, Markets with a good range of foods, etc.... The area looks like a real functioning urban environment, and yes I know some of the shops may not fit into the hip areas of the city. Although I wonder why nobody has mentioned ANY of the shops?

How often do you see either of these types business' in other parts of the city? Just a couple of the many business' on West Vernor.

The lists are helpful....in letting people know that these businesses exist!! And if they know about them, maybe they will patronize them...and tell their friends. Gotta bring the business to them to keep them around...and attract more small businesses!!!

Probably because Small Business Saturday [[along with Black Friday and Cyber Monday) are geared towards shopping for Christmas gifts....not everyday living. Hence the shops and other establisments listed in this thread are intended as suggestions for holiday shopping.

A separate post on unique small businesses in the metro area might be in order.

Even though many of them would fit into the category being discussed?

I'm sure that some of them would fit into the category being discussed. Maybe you could provide names and addresses. That said, I don't shop for holiday gifts at a pharmacy as shown in your photos. [[I can't make out the name in purple in your first photo; maybe it is a place where I could buy gifts?)

I just posted those pics because that is all I had. The purple shop is a dress shop but I doubt their type of couture is what you are looking for. In my annoying way I was just trying to say there is more out there than we think time to go out and explore!

Just for kicks I found it in Google Street View at W. Vernor & Carson. It appears to have been a thrift store in July 2009 although its paint is different than the photo above.

I found McNichols Electric to repair a old toaster and I was very impressed with their service. They've been around a lot of years.
They not only do they do repair but they sell household appliances at very reasonable prices. Here's their website: http://www.mcnicholselectric.com/ Located at 6 mile just west of Schaefer.

I didn't mention any of the shops you reference because I'm not familiar with businesses in that area. My list pertains to mostly businesses that I frequent near my neighborhood [[Lafayette Park), which are Downtown or in Midtown.

I certainly understand your point, however.

p69rrh51 if you have businesses that you want to endorse along Vernor, no one is stopping you. Add them by all means. Just because an area is under represented on the list does not mean that there is no activity, it may be an indicator that those who have posted may simply not live there.

I think its more than simply lived there. I think nobody goes there except to eat. Just was wondering why that was when its the only part of town acting like the urban environment many on here are craving?

"God rest ye merry merchants may you make the yuletide pay....."

The one thing that is left out of the Black Friday/Small Business Saturday equation is all the national chains that DON'T benefit from Black Friday.

Many shopping center leases require all merchants to be open when the major's are. I spent 10 years with Kinney Shoes and let me tell you, there's nothing worse than opening at 4am on Black Friday and standing around on the company's dime drinking coffee for the next 6 hours. For every Sears or Macy's or Wal-Mart that were crammed with people, I'd be willing to bet that there were 10 other merchants, both national and local, who had employees standing around with their fingers in their ears.

Why are you then pushing for people to shop businesses no one ever goes?? You're not making sense.
