Default Michigan GOP releases ad bashing Detroit.

LB Patterson requests it to be removed from the airwaves. GOP refuses:

Matt Frendeway, Michigan Republican Party spokesman, said the party does not consult with candidates before running ads and feels strongly the ad should continue its run on cable TV.

"It's factual and we think it's an important message to convey to voters — that you have Oakland County, where things are going well under Republican leadership," Frendeway said.

As for objections from candidates being promoted in ads, "We respect that and appreciate their thoughts, and at the end of the day we remain independent, and we will continue to be," Frendeway said.

The 34-second TV piece says Detroit is "a place known for outrageous spending and crushing debt, for blight and decay, corruption and incompetence. That's hard on business and terrible for jobs."

It shows multiple images of decrepit buildings around the city and footage of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick being escorted out of police cars and courtrooms during his criminal trials.

Then it dovetails into the merits of Oakland County and its AAA bond rating, saying: "We do things differently … we are open for business and always creating jobs."

Is anyone really shocked about this ad? It's affirming a message regularly spoken outloud by many mi residents.

Maybe one day the political consulting hacks will tell us something we haven't heard yet. But I won't hold my breath.

Only the Michigan GOP would be brilliant enough to dis the state's major city right in its own market. What's next from these guys? A bombing campaign?

No, I think of the businessperson staying at a hotel going over a deal he's going to seal tomorrow morning, looking at this kind of infighting, and considering doing his business anywhere but in metro Detroit next time.

Maybe we should focus our outrage on the fact that our city is F-ed up as opposed to being outraged that people have noticed.

I don't think the GOP was counting on any votes from Detroit.

I see the circular firing squad has been re-inacted. It'll be a real knee-slapper when Romney has to spend his next years doing something besides running for Pres, when Obama gets re-elected.

Man, how funny would it be if Oakland County looses it's AAA rating because of this? Think about it the state's executive and legislative branches of government are republican controlled and the Michigan GOP are using the city as their political punching bag. What if the credit agencies decide that the GOP have given up on working with the city, and because of this downgrade Oakland bond rating on the assumption that they are going to let the city go broke. I know that this is extremely unlikely but who knows these days?

Actually, that's the ONLY reason LBP all of a sudden gives a fuck about Detroit. It has finally clicked in his head that as Detroit goes, so does the region.

10 years ago, LBP wanted NOTHING to do with Detroit.

That was my first thought too, i remember back in 08 or 09 when he first learned that if Detroit went belly up he would loose his AAA rating how is whole outlook on the city suddenly changed.

I wonder if the reason why he wants this ad taken down is that he's nervous that if Detroit becomes a tea party hot-button issue than the creditors may start reevaluating Oakland's AAA rating?

That about what I imagine is going through LBP's head.

The poor guy broke into tears when he discovered that Krystal Crittendon could possibly derail the FSA [[which would have put Detroit on a fast track to its inevitable Chapter 9 Bankruptcy filing).

There may be one or two repub votes in varied areas of a given ballot even in the D! I've worked at the elections centers and have handled a few 'spoiled' ballots due to people trying to vote both dem and repub in areas on the ballot where you cannot mix the two - such as in the primaries.

We had to issue a new ballot in those cases, so I know more people are not doing the default straight dem option.

Are you referring to Schostak? I know him personally, and I seriously doubt he owns dilapidated properties in the city [[or in any city, for that matter). Their investment focus generally doesn't really fit with urban anything.

And, while I wouldn't run the ad, because it's divisive, it's also 100% true.

    Is it?

The Packard Plant, which was shown in the ad as an example of Democrats mismanaging Detroit, closed in 1957. Detroit had two Republican mayors in 1957, Albert Cobo, who died in office, and Louis Miriani who replaced him and remained in office for 4 and a half years.

It's amazing that anyone can seriously believe that Detroit spends "outrageously." Every service has been cut for years--our parks department budget is probably less than many suburban county towns with a fraction of the population. Firehouses are understaffed when they're not closed completely. If you really think Detroit is "overspending" you are totally delusional.

Really? You wonder where anyone would get the idea that Detroit overspends?

Well then call me totally delusional, because there is waste all over the place in Detroit.

City managers have luxury cars for their free personal use, there are entire departments of limited utility, and there's no shortage of tax dollars spent on questionable "economic development".

Yes, the city overall has little money, and many day-to-day functions are starved to the bone, but there is a ton of waste in pretty broad sectors of city government.

This is in contrast to Oakland County, which, despite its wealth and prosperity, has cut personnel costs much faster than either Detroit or Wayne County. Both Detroit and [[especially) Wayne have a ridiculous amount of questionable spending.

I only wish my city government were as well run as the county government.
