Very beautiful church. I had visited the church a couple of years ago. Very spacious and could seat up to 1000 people. Very historic and does have a nice organ. Historic Trinity takes the spotlight away from this church. Saint John has a basketball court on it's top floors for where the church's youths once played more than 50 years ago. I will be at the recital.

Just some brief notes about St. John's:

First service was held in 1833 in a carpenter shop Woodbridge and Bates. The church was formally organized on September 22, 1833 with the election of elders.

St. John's is the "Mother" church to at least ten congregations, including Historic Trinity, which were established as the German population of Detroit grew in number.

Church records are available from its inception. The records from St. Luke's are also available.

The current church building was dedicated in 1874. It seats nearly 1500 which includes seating in an upper level three-sided gallery. The building was designed by Julius Hess, a local architect. The original facade was red brick which was covered in stone patterned concrete in 1914. The interior was painted white at the time of this renovation. All new windows were installed by the Detroit Stained Glass Works in 1947.

The community of St. John's looks forward to your enjoyment of the recital.
