The statements addressing the symbolism behind the relighting is predictable. But was there a specific reason why it wasn't lit for the last five years, other than perhaps cost-cutting... or apathy?After standing dark for five years, the torch was relit to signify a monumental change in the way that the public and private sectors are working together to achieve a common goal - making greater Detroit one of the top five places in the country to live and work by the year 2030, which is the year when children born in 2012 will graduate from high school.
That's one lofty goal they put out there. Top 5? Wish them the best.
I've been in the Pacific Northwest 30 years now, and I still refer to the United Way fundraising effort as "The Torch Drive"......
