Default Detroit Police officers hear more proposed cuts after mediation meeting with Detroit

The Detroit Police Officers will be making less money than a security guard at the mall if the Mayor and Snyder have their way. Mayor Bling still has his nice suits, his entourage of security, his salary. I have a strong feeling that officers will walk off the job if this persecution continues. Legally, they are not allowed to walk, but the City is not holding up their end of the contracts. When will this end? What incentives do officers have anymore? Keep chipping away at their futures and see the tragic consequences. The thugs in Detroit will have a field day.

^^^^As I've said so many times before, too much fat at the top. Instead of trimming that off, they are literally cutting into the bone of the officers for more and more of their life blood. I'm sure the top brass is very much aware they have the officers by the short hairs knowing that there is nothing else out there for employment if they choose to leave...other than in other states who have been recruiting DPD for many years because of their excellent training at the academy and their on the job experiences.

Many of these men/women have spent their entire working career for Detroit and I know there are at least 35 new recruits that graduated in April who are making the minimum wage right now. Take 10% wage cut, additional healthcare costs, now asking for more from pensions and future healthcare, you are asking them to live below poverty level. This certainly is not what they signed up for.

Can the City be fair and pay them a decent wage for a decent days work? Asking them to work 12 hour shifts, day after day...for pennies, is really pushing some of them to the limits. What an embarassment for Detroit, they are the lowest paid officers in the U.S.A. and are in the worse City as far as crime is concerned. Bing, Gary Brown, Charles Pugh should try to live on what they are asking the men/women to live on...it would never happen.

Way to much fat at the top and I dont see any improvement in sight.
Same over at Wayne county. Napoleans appointees are now up to 41 with half making over $100,000.
The DPD management is a joke, and a bunch of scammers, but nothing new here.
Now the cop on the street has to pay which isnt fair. And I agree these guys put their lifes on the line every day and deserve a good pay.

cla1945, could you clarify your assertions? What salary will the officers be making after the cuts? Also, you refer to new recruits making minimum wage. Certainly you don't mean the Michigan Minimum Wage of $7.40 per hour, do you?

The new recruit [[just out of the academy in April) will be making approx. $28,000/yr. after the cuts. That's not minimum wage so I misspoke, however, when you consider the type of job this is, it's an insult to every officer working for Detroit. Poverty level for a family of 4 is about $23,000. After almost nine months of rigorous training, studying, physical training, $28,000/yr. is pretty bad.

When a recruit to the New York Police Department enters the academy, he receives a base salary of $41,975 at the time of publication, according to the department, or the equivalent of $20.18 per hour. Additional allowances, such as base pay, holiday pay and uniform allowances raise a recruit’s annual earnings to $44,744. After six months on the force, he may expect to receive $46,288 with average night shift differentials and longevity pay added to his earnings. A year later, his base pay increases to $43,644 annually.

The starting base salary for high school graduates is $47,042. If you have at least 60 college semester units, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better, you will start at $48,942. If you have a BA or BS [[four year) degree you will start at $50,842. Police Officer salary increases after successful completion of the 6-month Police Academy, with annual salary increases thereafter up to $83,311
You begin earning your full salary on your first day of Academy training.

I TOTALLY agree. Detroit is always putting the cart in front of the horse. They keep building these fancy grandiose projects to draw people, but the bottom line is no one feels safe here, so they don’t even consider moving here. YES there’s a resurgence of young people in the Cass Corridor. [[I believe they’ve changed the name now? Oh well). But is this sustainable? Are these people going to permanently settle and contribute to the tax base? Speaking “of the top”, with the population shrinking, does Detroit REALLY need as an extensive government, [[read City Council & aids), as it has? EVERYTHING seems to be shrinking but the “top”.

You are 100% right. Protect the public. Fight Fires. Recycle garbage. Do this first. All else is secondary.

The feds are making them build the new police station. The city was cited under the Archer Administration. This has been long deferred.

Now normally I would agree. This shows you just how messed-up the city finances are. The City needs both well paid front line personnel and a new building. I have a sneaking suspicion that this building will have a lot of corners cut as well.

Detroit Planner, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the consent decree mandated a new police HQ. I know they were supposed to make improvements to holding cells and some other things, but I don't recall a new HQ being ordered.

While I would agree a new HQ is needed, the City probably would have been better served by taking over the old State of Michigan building at Sixth and Howard. Lots of space and parking, and the State Police used to run operations out of there, also. The State probably would have given it to them for a dollar, and the re-fitting costs probably would not have been as onerous as those with the temp casino property.

The leadership in this City shows very little common sense in financial matters.

The Police HQ was under construction before the FSA was a part of the equation.

313WX, I was talking about the consent decree that Detroit Planner referenced; the one that was entered into back in the 90s.

I think he meant under the Archer administration Detroit received a notice that the current police headquarters wasn't up to grade.

There was no "Consent Decree" to build a new one signed with anyone.

I'm not sure what he meant, so hopefully he can clarify.

I wasn't aware of any situation where the feds are making the City build a new DPD HQ, which is why I asked.

Every cut corner is an opportunity for corruption. And with the federal investigation, the prices for Detroit officials should be going up. In the meantime, the hand-chosen 'minority' front for the man will build a sub-standard building, then pay again later to fix things up -- until some weak justification becomes available as to why they can't fix the place anymore -- then the 'we deserve a new building' song -- and the cycle starts over. Spring again in bureaucracyland.

Detroit cops are underpaid but you also can't compare cost of living in NYC to Detroit , NYC also has a large tax base,

I saw a marquee on Family Video this morning saying Manager Wanted, starting at $32,000/yr. That's sad when a manager of a video store makes more than a starting cop in Detroit.

I agree ,I just pulled a couple of examples of what is based across the country, big cities and small towns to show that they have an option.

Can you imagine getting up everyday and dealing with the lower part of society everyday, not knowing if you are going home at night to see your family, then to make matters even worse while you are doing that you are being thrown under the bus by those who seem to be claiming to be your brothers?

Like the firefighters I do not see how they do it other then they must have a hell of a lot of love for their job and city and the rest does not matter?

The money is there, just follow the trail. Mismanagement, corrupt commanders, appointees, chiefs, etc...know where the money is. The cops are getting the shaft.
