Default Navy Week Detroit - Sept. 5-9, 2012

General Motors and Chevrolet are gearing up for Detroit’s War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration Sept. 5-9, with many free, public events in and around GM’s Renaissance Center World Headquarters.

Five days of festivities – part of Navy Week – are sponsored by a nonprofit coalition led by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard. Activities include ship tours, technology displays, search and rescue and rifle drill team demonstrations, and daily performances by U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps bands..........

Just toured the DeWert this morning. I'll post some pics later today.

Odd thing at the end of the tour. We were waiting a long time for the bus to take us back downtown. It was there, but no one could board. Then this guy comes up to us in plain clothes and escorted by a seaman. He flashes an NCIS badge at one guy who, for whatever reason, brought his laptop. Looked like he intended to inspect the laptop. After that the bus comes and takes the rest of us back. Not sure why that guy was allowed to bring the laptop in the first place. He didn't return with us.

I thought awhile ago someone said war ships weren't allowed on the Great Lakes. Guess that isn't true.

I saw a vintage C-47/Navy RD-4 circling over the area from Roseville and SCS yesterday.
Was that part of Navy Week?

No. They have been flying for a few weeks. Its part of a shorline/lake mapping project. Cool to see it lumbering around the skies though!

Not to thread jack, but can you elaborate? I saw/heard that plane and thought it was a Yankee Air Force plane at first but for the markings and bizarre nose [[camera for mapping, doubt). Where is it based and who is doing the work?
