DETROIT — After being stopped by Ferndale police while in a stolen Crown Victoria on 8 Mile Road in Detroit, Vilary R. Reed decided to make a break for it.

Reed appeared as if he was going to comply with the police stop near the intersection of San Juan about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
But then Reed seemed to have a change of heart. He "accelerated and sped though Detroit side streets to escape the officer," Ferndale police said in a release Tuesday.
"Reed ran through stop signs, sped, and lost control and crashed at Pennington and Pembroke," police said. "When Reed emerged from the car, he was carrying a 21-month-old baby boy in his arms. Reed ran from police while carrying the baby."

While on foot, in an apparent effort to lighten his load, Reed handed the child to a woman who was standing outside in her yard and continued to flee on foot but was later captured by police.

Police returned the child to his mother and learned that Reed is not the father but was babysitting at the time of the pursuit.

Reed is on parole for a conviction of fleeing and eluding police and has previous convictions for receiving and concealing stolen vehicles. He is expected to be arraigned on charges determined by the Oakland County Prosecutor today.
