The only remnants left of the Mack & Chalmers Shopping Center is the tall sign on the corner that says...Mack & Chalmers Shopping Center.

I have seen that picture. A lonely sign pointing to what was.

No one that I know of has any pictures of that business district. We just did not go up and down Mack Ave. snapping pictures. I guess we never gave it any thought that it wouldn't always be there.

I have a Polk directory from 1967 that will list all the businesses along Mack. I'm out of town for a couple of days but when I get back I will post a copy.

I notice that 3 storefronts are vacant next to the Kresge store. Some of the businesses that I remember are not on the list such as Cunningham's & the Uptown theatre. I do know that the Uptown closed sometime in the 60's and it must have been before 1967. I imagine a Polk directory from 1959 would look much different. However, there were businesses on the list that I do remember. Most notably Johnny's Mobile Service, Kresge's & Chalmers Lunch my old teenage hangout.

well, i sure remember plenty of those places. gambinos,club raven [[i think mom and dad went there once or twice), gaudinos, dominics bel cassino....went there a few times..., m&m pet shop which moved to east warren at some point, and especially trees furniture. we would walk up one alley and down another two and drag the boxes home that the furniture came in. my sisters and i would make houses out of them and puppet theatres and have puppet shows for the other kids in the neighborhood. thanks mike!

I am not MlkeM, but i am interested in what you find at the Burton collection. As far as I know, the only pictures of the area are what has already been posted. Hopefully, you can come up with images from the 1950's.

I can't remember any other dept. stores other then Mack, and Chalmer area from Connor,to Alter. Other then Fleming drugs and Riley's at Lenox. I worked at DiLorenzo's Pizzaria as a delivery boy in the early 70, so I know the area well. Plus walked down Mack to Jackson also everyday. There was Gambino's bakery. Carmens, a Murry's auto store later on. Can't remember much else.

While I remember so many theatres on Jefferson, I don't recall any along Mack Ave. Maybe due to being a bit too young to recall that...any idea when it was razed?

There was a RKO Uptown on Woodward at Six Mile. It became the Six Mile Uptown. They must have been sisters?

I mentioned the Uptown Theater several times in my previous posts. Maybe you didn't read them. You will see the Uptown listed in the Polk directory from 1954 that xequar posted.

The Uptown was a very special place for me. I spent many Sunday afternoons with my friends in that theater. That was back in the time when 2 movies, cartoons, previews & a newsreel were shown.
