Default more ruin porn: "The birthplace of the Boss - A tour of Detroit" [[Globe and Mail)

Now this is ruin porn, no question - with an expensive new muscle car thrown in for added offense to the residents.

In addition to which, the author managed to repeat the usual "Heading south on the Ambassador Bridge into Detroit" mistake.

Personally, I think the term ruin porn is rubbish, used by folks who want to find something to bitch about.

I agree, it is what it is. In reading the article, I am glad we have an automobile industry here in Detroit where such a desired product is designed, created, and then assembled, all primarily in the metro area.

Those pictures were so funny. He's in love with that car. This article was an excuse to drive around and explore a little. Yes, he did take pictures of vacant property. But you know, that's something we got that the others don't have: at least not like ours.

Sure, we have the Fox Theatre, & college students and families can afford to live in mansions, but other cities had homesteading and eventual recovery too. We're there now. In the era that the post-Whole Foods, shopping malls, and [[dare I?) Cheese Cake Factory you will reminisce about. This is that moment when the water has gone so far out leaving you isolated and dry in the relentless sun.

I hear the mounting waves, a low distant roar that can only pick up force. And maybe they will recede again. As happens in cities, in superpowers, on planets, and in solar systems. But won't it have been better to have laughed and dusted your shoulder off when you read some outsider reporter repeating the same drivel we've all read too many times; hooked in by our city's name?

    In sum, f**k 'em.
