max headrooom x 10,000. kiss photojournalism, as we know it, goodbye. drone as standard equipment for newsgatherers and law enforcement. now I know how "they" will watch and selectively silence all but the sheep.
Nice find Carey.
The new way to tour the fabulous ruins of Detroit? For the tech heads on the forum, I am wondering how close one must be to operate the drone in terms of interference by walls and even other radio signals. In other words did those interior shots require the operator to be inside the building? This appears to be a heliocopter drone[?]
A Grosse Pointe doctor friend of mine has been doing something similar for quite a while with remote control radio planes.
This from an old email...
Hi Lowell, met you a few times through Al ****. Have made aerial videos of interesting Detroit Landmarks, original videos are 640x 280. Google hosts compressed if you wish to see.
regards,
Mitch

I'm pretty sure the FCC puts a maximum range on the old-style remote RF devices. I think some ipad devices might have a range of 5 or 6 miles, but those usually come with very expensive copter kits, and I wouldn't want to let $3-6K of equipment get 6 miles away from me
This is pretty amazing. Lowell, I remember when you posted that Woodward/I-75 video the first time, really cool to get that kind of persepective. I think that these tools are a great resource that should be further developed... I know at my previous job communities would pay quite a bit for 3-d models in SketchUp or other platforms to help visualize both current conditions and new ideas. Meshing computer models with a carefully done flyover would take it to the next level!
I'm wondering from you and others, legally speaking... what is the definition of tresspassing via air? Not that many of our urban spelunkers are worried about that sort of thing... but would flying feet from the roof of a building be illegal [[would certainly draw the ire of residents/owners!).
Also, I'd be willing to bet that the range on the device Mr. 5000 was using is pretty advanced and has a long-distance reception. Unless the operator was standing at the front window half way up the MCS, it would have to have reliable controls to a range above and through that concrete structure... especially given the manuvers he/she was making.
Great stuff!
This sounds about right to me. And, I am with you on the range... this operator must have some very reliable controls if they are flying what has to be pretty expensive drone and camera through the holes and openings of old factories and off the roof of the MCS!
This rig has amazing control and clarity.
