All this is going to do is make strip club owners pull up shop and move to the suburbs, because any horny customer with a car will be happy to drive to The Landing Strip or some other club. And if Detroit's strip club owners don't relocate to a friendlier city, they'll go out of business.

Just what the city needs -- less tax base.

DISCUSS being a key word...nothing has passed yet.

Looks like Detroit's 'church ladies' are at work, again. I would have thought this was sponsored by Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, but I'm looking at a recent Detroit News article on this, and she's supposedly with a majority of the council in questioning the alcohol ban. Shocker, really, given her background.

Members Martha Reeves, Kenneth Cockrel Jr., Sheila Cockrel, Monica Conyers and Alberta Tinsley-Talabi all expressed problems with the alcohol ban, which was suggested by city staffers in consultation with a Tennessee anti-strip club attorney.
I think Martha Reeves actually hit this on the head in terms of the look of this:

"There are all kinds of people in this world," Reeves said. "The first thing in my mind when I read this ... was it was written by a minister."
It seems that it's the religious community and not the council pushing this. Only JoAnn Watson seems to be really receptive to this:

Despite the ban's chilly reception Wednesday, it appears some in the religious community will continue to push it. Richard Mack, a member of Perfecting Church who has been vocal on the issue, said "what I see, I like."

The ministers would rather the money be given to them than the strippers.

If the rules go through, you'll start seeing an increase of strippers working at "house parties" around the city......think strip clubs lower property values? Wait until the strip club is operating in the vacant house next door to you.

I agree. The ministers need to stay out of this. However, that club on 8 mile with that stripper almost baring the twins needs to be covered up.

I'm not going to go look up the statute, but it was always my understanding that the Michigan law was that if alcohol was present, the girls could only be topless....which is why many a bachelor heads to Windsor which doesn't have that restriction. By banning alcohol, wouldn't that simply allow topless to go to fully nude?

that would be the perfect irony.

    Bailey:
Normally, no alcohol does mean fully nude in a strip club in Michigan. However, one of the additional rules that is proposed is to require dancers to wear opaque pasties at all times. Detroit's strip clubs would not become fully nude.

    Waltbaby01:
I argued the same thing on my blog last week.

If this passes, we're likely to see a dramatic increase in the number of illegal strip clubs setting up. No matter what complaints one might have regarding legal strip clubs, the illicit ones are even worse.

Why all the fuss about lap dancing. What"s wrong with Finnish people dancing.

But as long as the holy rollers get to turn up their nose and declare "victory," that's all that matters. "Harumph!"

You all need some female company. Strip clubs seem way to important to you all. Have any of you ever kissed a woman yet?

As a city that wants to be a tourist destination, wouldn't it want to make the strip clubs more fun and exciting to go to??

Best Man: "Hey want to go to Detroit for your Bachelor party? We could hit up the casino then run over to the strip club for a while!"

Groom: "Nah. Detroit strips clubs suck. Let's head over to Canada instead, I hear that you can drink in all of their clubs and they are fully nude too!"

No sale. I think most people prefer their ministers fully clothed.

Will male strippers have to wear pasties too?

I'm glad to see that things are going well in Detroit overall. I mean, they must be, if the City government has time to spend on things such as this. Sheesh.

Yes, all the world's great tourist destinations are built around strip clubs.

That statement is just as ignorant as saying, all the world's great tourist destinations are built around casinos, sports, and art.

Sex sells, quit being so unprogressive.

So you honestly think someone's going to buy a plane ticket and book a hotel room so they can visit one of the city's skanky, hole-in-the-wall strip clubs? One MIGHT make an argument if we had Vegas-style, high-end establishments, but Detroit?

    Have another sip of Kool-Aid.
