My sister is at a wedding reception at the Atheneum and it all happened right across from their view. She said paramedics did CPR, stopped, loaded him up. Not looking good, he was totally limp and left a puddle behind

wow, too bad. If he did that after losing in the casino that will be bad press. That is awful to have your wedding ruined like that.

I was riding my bike with my 16 year old daughter to the Detroit City Futbol game at about 6:30 pm today. We were right there when it happened. Did not actually see it but heard the guy hit the ground as we were riding by, heard the screams, looked to my right and we saw the guy in the street, blood running from his head. I'm praying he survived. My daughter said she saw his hand moving but it did not look good. The security guard, not sure if he was from the Atheneum or Greektown Casino, called it in immediately so I hope EMS showed up right away. There was nothing we could do.

An old friend's brother killed himself by jumping off the Greektown Garage off I-375 a couple of years ago. My guess is this happens all the time and the Casinos cover it up. Later I thought I wish I had called the press.

This needs to be exposed. I hate the casinos. Investigative reporters, there is story here. How many suicides right on the casino property, and what are they doing about it besides keeping it quiet? Only place you can hear about this news is Detroit Yes.

When I saw this initially the first thought was "damn." The second thought was an inappropriate comment regarding losing ones' shirt at a casino. I feel sorry for his family...

I'm no fan of the casinos, but where there's a will there's a way. I understand an older cousin of mine hitched a ride to Belle Isle in the 60's, then told the guy to stop in the middle of the bridge. "Stick around if you want to see something" were apparently his last words. They closed the observation deck at the Penobscot due to it's popularity for more than the view.

Speaking as a former gambler [[four years gambling free) I have seen some things - mostly people crying [[men and woman) on the elevators, in their cars out in the parking lot, after a 'fun' day at the casino. In the MGM lot saw a woman frantically snatch off her eye glasses, twist them into pieces, then jump in her car and drive off almost hitting a pylon.

The parking lots reveal alot as the light of day [[consequences) really hit when you leave a casino 'down' [[lost money there). You see folks driving wildly out a casino after loosing their money [[get out of the way or be mowed down). Simple fact of the matter is MOST people are loosing money at these stupid places.

There's a segment of gamblers who are doing so in secret which causes stress in the family, on their jobs if they are working etc. ETC. The mood overall at our casinos is pretty macabre... hardly festive. I'm not surprised the casinos do what they can to keep the negative things that happen on the low-low!

I am voting NO on any additional casinos or stand alone slot machines.

The garage mentioned is not only for casino traffic. Lots of others park there. We had someone jump off our parking deck about ten years back and my office is not convenient to any of the casinos. I suggest there may be a lot of people jumping to the wrong conclusion. People jump for all sorts of reasons. After all the Penobscot observation deck was closed decades before we had casinos.

I never had the casino force me to gamble. It sounds like from some comments its the casino fault. But at the end of the day its the person fault.

Should we blame Ford, GM, Chrysler, UAW and MDOT for deaths in car accidents?

Agreed. If the casinos where the main factor for jumping there'd be people jumping from their lots weekly if not daily! But casinos IMO are a contributing factor in the hopelessness and despair in this town. You can even see the dour expressions in many of the staff.

Apples to oranges comparison, but I DO see your broader point.

The specific and problematic issue with our casinos relative to Detroit and Detroiters is availability and proximity, coupled with a situation of desperation. There are many Detroiters who would have never flown to Vegas to gamble regularly, or perhaps wouldn't have become habitual gamblers if that entailed great travel, planning, or forethought.

IMO distance gamblers who do Vegas, etc. are more likely to spend discretionary income. Neighborhood gamblers are spending money they can hardly afford.

With proximity to gambling houses here some people just got 'caught up'. I am not EXCUSING the behavior, but I saw it happen. You see otherwise rational people, day and night, nickle and dime themselves into a place of regret.

But just as the 'first' day you walk into those joints, you have be responsible and own up to problem, cut your looses [[realizing you'll never get the money back) and walk out that final, last time.

I stand corrected! I was being generous to the favor of the casinos a bit! There's really no true discretionary income to be thrown away these joints.Casinos jack up just about everyone, local or distant!!

^^^^ Great analogy IMO. A former crack addict I know told me in detail that you find all kinds of 'consumers' in a Crack House, some don't look like the type who'd be addicted. Many full-out addicted casino gamblers don't have a standard visible profile. Those joints pull all kinds of folk.

It may have started out as entertainment... MGM even has a 'coin-star' coin conversion machine for the truly 'caught up' to cash in their coin jar! If you are cashing in coins should you really be gambling?

It depends. For some reason the local commuter train system puts a blackout on suicides during the Holidays to dissuade copycats. While a local shopping mall covers up rapes & robberies so people can't protect themselves.

I don't understand this post. What needs to be exposed? People kill themselves all the time, just because its a casino and he MAY have lost some money there, doesn't make it their fault. Also, how would the casino cover something like this up? I don't understand that logic.

Everyone always tried to look at who to blame. It's no ones fault this guy tried to kill himself. The fault is with the individual.

I wouldn't pray for someone surviving. At least if they died on impact there would be no pain. Surviving would result in a long painful death. Last fall a law student marched into our building, took an elevator to a high floor and searched for a vacant apartment that are left unlocked. He jumped out the window falling 20 stories onto concrete. He survived, but died later because of complicated injuries. It's bad enough people have to end their life in the first place, but to suffer and die is just unimaginable. I just wish there had been someone there to stop them.

This is simply another "told you so" moment.

The casinos are simply a scourge on civilization, period.

I've only been into them under a half-dozen times, and every instance I've walked out feeling mystically toxic...spiritually poisoned. It is sick.

It is time to remind everyone that according to the Freep, in the time BEFORE the Detroit crooks opened up public shop...the Windsor casino caused an increase in Gambler's Anonymous chapters to increase from 4 to over 200.

That was just ONE casino where you had to travel to another country...

They are a scourge. Yeah, Greektown has kept one of my favorite people downtown employed for years...<sigh>...but he is dancing with the devil for his income. Ethically and morally, all the employees are within the liability loop.

There was an excellent article on This American Life on NPR about gambling problems last week...it was very revealing of how these crooks conspire to take people for every cent they can.

No cheers, I'd rather see them all go away today.
