Default Popular Fireworks Viewing Spot in Jeopardy

WWJ's Vickie Thomas reports that the city of Detroit is considering closing off the Riverwalk on the east waterfront during next month's fireworks show [[June 25th).

We're hearing it's tied to last year's shooting there, which sparked a lot of chaos in the moments after it happened.

Maybe we need to remind them that the shooting back in 2006 or so was at the intersection of Jefferson and Woodward. That should be closed, too, then.

And don't forget, a woman was shot during the SuperBowl celebration in front of the bar north of Foran's Grand Trunk at Campus Martius. Close that, too, can't be too safe.

Then there is that spot near Hart Plaza where the lead oarsman from Cadillac's first boat skinned his knee on the first landing...better alert Homeland Security/Border Patrol to keep their eyes open, just in case.

Ugh. Will the idiocy of bureaucracy ever cease?!

Probably not as long as there exist bureaucrats.

Clueless. How 'bout they add security instead.

The solutions and PR this town manages to come up with are so, frankly, Afganistan-like. It's not the fourth century, but the absurdity on all floors at City-County sure gives it that perception.

This report may not be entirely accurate. The River Walk is created and operated by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. They have their own security - albeit augmented heavily with other agencies. The conservancy may be closing parts of the river walk, as it was the Conservancy and GM on the hook last year for letting armed and dangerous people on their property with no security checks.

Suffice to say - there will be viewers there, but they will probably be people who are contributers to the Conservancy.
