This house has had me perplexed for decades!
Listed in W. Hawkins Ferry's book Buildings of Detroit as the residence of William B. Stratton. Ferry listed the house as being located on West Warren, but Stratton never lived on the street. He is listed the city directories residing/boarding at what is now 444 Peterboro [[originally 24 Joy) from 1895-1896, and what is now 451 West Fort Street [[originally 165) from 1897-1899. Therein lies the dilemma, and for awhile I thought Ferry may have listed a bogus house in the book. Then this past Monday the Detroit Free Press came to the rescue! In the course of my research I came across the rendering posted below and knew immediately what house it was. The included article helped finally pinpoint the location. Also Wayne State University's Virtual Motor just happened to have most of the images posted below. The first image is from Buildings of Detroit, unfortunately the source of the image was not listed in the key in the back of the book.
This was the model house, built in 1895 for a new subdivision developed by the Gearing Brothers. According the city directories the house sat vacant until 1899, the first owner was Samuel X. Goldberg. Over time the house became the office of the President of Wayne State University until its demolition in 1959.
Designed by Stratton & Baldwin for J. L. and J. V. Gearing. 474 West Warren built in 1895 Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. Includes images from Buildings of Detroit, date unknown, images from Wayne State University's Virtual Motor City Collection, circa 1950's, and a rendering and article from an 1895 edition of the Detroit Free Press.

    Demolished: July 15, 1959

I was very fortunate to be able to view the plans for this house last week. This is the first set of plans I have seen with a signature for both architects.
