Gistok's passion for C. Howard Crane has me motivated to explore the lessor known but excellent work around the city. This is a work in progress and I would like to know who is your favorite. Up first is Pollmar & Ropes a very good but not very well known firm specializing in small commercial/apartment buildings.

It is worth noting that the Chatworth Apartment building is listed on both the state and federal historical register.

And all but the Altadena, the Charles, the Sander's Building and 1940 Wellesley are listed on the Detroit Register. 1940 Wellesley is on the National Register as part of Palmer Woods.

Another firm Herman & Simons was a favorite of the Cook Farm Company. They designed several homes for Cook in Indian Village. The firms principles were Aloys Fank Herman and Howard Thomas Simons.

Herman & Simons group #2. The next four were designed as spec homes for the Cook Farm Company and all are on the west side of Burns. The four homes on the east side were designed for Cook by Robert O. Derrick. All of the homes share similar square footage and lot size.

701 West Boston Boulevard built in 1911 was designed by Wells D. Butterfield. Mostly known for his partner/daughter Emily who was the first woman granted a license to practice architect by the State of Michigan. He also designed Highland Park High School. Included are a recent image and an image from a 1916 issue of the Western Architect.

Across the street 650 West Boston Boulevard built in 1911 was designed by Elmore Ray Dunlap. Dunlap's employee on a few projects Leonard Willeke would eventually overshadow him.

Even though he is not from Detroit I am posted the only commission I know of existing in the Detroit area. 2 Clairview was designed by Pittsburgh based Albert H. Spahr in 1917. I know Spahr has been discussed in the past. This home has recently been researched and I was very delighted to find out its origins.

One of the better at designing large dwellings Raymond Carey. He practiced in the Detroit after the turn of the 20th century until the early teens. He resided in Winnipeg Manitoba until the early 20's when he returned to Detroit.

Carey's home when he resided in Winnipeg. Note some of the similar details to latter works.
