Default Does this year seem particularly rough on the music world?

Just found out banjo legend Doug Dillard and legendary bassist Duck Dunn died recently as well.

    The list so far:
    Doug Dillard
    Duck Dunn
    Donna Summer
    Whitney Houston
    Robin Gibb
    Chuck Brown [[Bustin Loose)
    Adam Yauch [[MCA)
    Davy Jones
    Don Kirchener
    Tommy Marth [[Killers)
    Dick Clark
    Levon Helm
    Jimmy Ellis [[Trammps)
    Ronnie Montrose
    Don Cornelius
    Etta James
    Johnny Otis
    Earl Scruggs
Everett Lilly [[another bluegrass legend, probably the #2 bluegrass mando player, after Bill Monroe, one time member of the foggy mountain boys [[50-52), Lilly Brothers and Don Stover)

    Am I missing anyone?

Another legend gone - three-time Grammy winner for traditional music, Doc Watson. One of the best flat-pickers among country and folk musicians. Transposed a lot of traditional fiddle music for guitar

RIP Bob Welch, former fleetwood mac guitarist who had a brief success solo with his "french kiss" album.

    This makes 20

Didn't care much for his solo album, but I really like the band he formed with the Sales brothers [[Soupy's sons) called Paris.

I think Tony and Hunt came into Paris for the second album

Yes, it has been rough. Good reason to get out, and experience live music, from live musicians. I am looking forward to a particularly good opportunity for this next month, when the Paradise Valley and Concert Of Colors festivals will occur, on the same weekend, in Detroit.

    I think you missed some.....

Herb Reed, The last surviving founder member of "The Platters".
John Harrison, , Basist and founding member of Hawkwind.
Charles Pitts, blues guitarist best known for his riff on Isaac Hayes' stomper "Theme from Shaft".
Andrew Love, Saxplayer in the Memphis Horns.
Greg Hamm, Fluitist in the band Men at Work. [[yes, that tune!)
Jimmy Castor, from the Bunch. [["What we're gonna do right her is go back, way back, back into time") Much sampled lyrics from the track Troglodyte.
Larry Reinhardt, lead guitarist in Iron Butterfly. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

And how is it possible you forgot to mention MC5 bassist Michael Davis??

...but I might have missed some as well....

    37. Why didn't I hear about these two? they weren't exactly small potatos. I guess it's because they weren't the faces of their songs

#38 [[unless I missed it in this list) would be R. B. Greaves [[Take A Letter, Maria), who passed early in October of prostate cancer at 68.

I write the typical [[i.e.: nobody reads it) older music blog for my local paper. Given the type of music I deal with....classic rock and soul, oldies and the like)......I end up doing a lot of obits, and it seems to me that I haven't written anywhere near as many this year as in years past.

These are some recent deaths that I've heard about.

The 50's artists are slipping away.

You can add Mickey Baker to the list. He was probably best known for his Love is Strange duet as Mickey and Sylvia, but his influence was much broader.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/30/ar...ies-at-87.html

Then, you can add Earl Carroll, lead of the Cadillacs [[They often call me Speedo but my real name is Mr. Earl) and later of the Coasters.

Also, Major Harris who sang with the Delfonics in the early 70s [[Love Won't Let Me Wait, and others).

There were also several lesser known jazz artists who have passed.
