Thread: Hamtown Farms

    Default Hamtown Farms

    Howdy Everyone!

I've alluded to Hamtown Farms in past posts- But we'd like to make an official thread about the project.

Hamtown Farms is a project that is in the process of reclaiming and revitalizing 9 long vacant city lots in Hamtramck.

When complete, Hamtown Farms will play host to more than 200 fruit trees as well as raised beds for community members to grow their own produce.

We can use your help and your vote! Edy's Fruit bars is donating 17 orchards across the country. Though Hamtown Farms is proceeding full steam ahead, winning this contest will get us off to an even stronger start. Visit http://www.communitiestakeroot.com to vote.

Plus, June 9th will be our big ol' ground breaking/ceremonial tree planting/community activation/media day. Hope you can join us.

Find Hamtown Farms on facebook or send me a note here to learn more about the project.

What a great idea and project Mike. Is there a map of the proposed Hamtown locations?

As of now there is only one site that totals 9 lots-near the intersection of Lumpkin and Holbrook. Name: site map.jpg

Not bad. I'd like to see more density, frankly, but the idea is a good one for the time being.

On a recent visit to San Francisco I truly learned what density can do for a city. Do bear in mind that, at roughly 11,000 people per square mile, Hamtramck is the most densely populated city in the state and 15th most densely populated city in the country.

This is a great opportunity to address quality of life instead of quantity of lives.

Oh, I know. I live just outside Hamtramck borders. And I agree. I love the density and would like more of it.

Ideas like this lead to density. How uplifting it must be be to live in a property near such an enterprise.

I think urban farms could be attractive for new developments to surround them. How nice to look out your front window at a blossoming orchard instead of a mud lot.

Yeah, Lowell. I know. I am not against community gardens. I have helped BUILD community gardens. It's wonderful to be around community gardens. They help you get to know and work with your neighbors.

For the record, I am also not against rainbows, unicorns, kittens and moderate sunshine.

I couldn't find hamtown farms but did see Messiah Housing which operates within my community. How about listing a zip code which seems to be how applicants are listed.

Best wishes for your garden plans.

If you use 48212 as the zip code, the little orange icon next to the words Highland Park marks Hamtown Farms.
