Default Lesser-known Mexicantown Restaurants With Good Food

Along Vernor there are a number restaurants that serve Mexican or Latin American food. Since they're not the popular Bagley Street Mexicantown restaurants, I've been hesitant to try them. Do any of these restaurants serve good food, have good service, and are places I'm willing to stick my head in? If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know?

We always go to Mexicantown Cafe at 24 th and Bagley. Excellent food, hot tortilla chips and salsa. Not spicy hot chips, but chips that just came out of the fryer!

I have often wondered about that myself. In the past I have seen Cuban and Dominican restaurants on W. Vernor but I have never heard much about them or that area. Are they good? Is that area safe at night to park and eat?

If you're rolling down Vernor check out E & L supermercado , Cafe Con Leche , Mexican Town & Luna bakeries , not restaurants , but great places to stop .

Lupita's gets my vote -- the food is authentically awesome. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/19/23688...upitas-Detroit

I second that. I had the tacos al pastor several years ago on a visit and I still think about them every once in a while. The food is excellent and authentic.

Have to try that one. Not a fan of Xocho and Armandos and the majority of Mexican restaurants in SE Michigan. They are all the same. A bunch of cheese on a plate with a side of slop.

I like La Brisas on Vernor just west of Springwells. Great food, band on weekends and secure fenced parking lot.

Los Altos, on Vernor a couple of block from where it splits from Dix, has really good food, a neighborhood atmosphere, and a warm, friendly staff. The prices are very reasonable. To me, they have the best carnitas in Detroit. I believe that it's owned by the same folks who own Lupita's.
