What struck me was the sophistication of manufacturing back then able to produce and then transport all those huge cannons and design and build new types of naval vessels all in such a short time frame. European military observers must have been amazed at the emerging military colossus the former colonies had turned into in such a short time frame. Compare all that with our more recent inability to keep up New Orleans' dikes and get help into new Orleans afterwards under Bush or our inability or unwillingness to defend the Mexican border.
