Default What Industries Do You Admire?

What industries do you admire for their honesty and forthrightness? I'm not talking about specific companies, I mean businesses in general, like banks, insurance, autos, investments, oil, credit cards, computers, airlines, health care, defense. Why? What do they do to make our country, society and world a better place? How do they treat their employees? How do they influence our government? What effects do they have on the environment, the marketplace, etc?

The railroad industry, I loved working for it until I was laid off, and wanted to become a locomotive engineer, I should have tried to find employment for another one in another state, and now regret that I didn't.

All productive capitalist industries providing goods and services that are wanted/needed/desired by consumers paying market determined prices, and obeying principles of law/free and fair trade...are to be admired.

I'm kinda fond of the porn industry.

Always finding new ways to entertain, educate, and otherwise engage us in the most base of shared activities...even baser when enjoyed solo.

They are STILL the only videographers taking full advantage of DVD's multiple angle feature...

Any industry headed by Democrats or Democratic ideals.

Anything headed up by fascists gets a thumbs down.

I don't care what industry it is, as long as they don't support fascist right wing causes.

The IT industry is far from immune to valid criticisms. That said, the open source subset of the software industry receives my admiration.

Agreed, Erie, though it's sad even this industry gets used for political gain.

I admire the foreign car industry for building plants in the United States and making money doing it, by keeping greedy unions out.

I know Islandman. But in the chest of a farmer, beats the heart of a people that truly want to do the best for everyone concerned. It's when the big business $hitasses get involved, that it goes down the tubes. It is very sad indeed.

I'll admire the Japanese , Korean, and German foreign car industry when they cut southern "right to work" US autoworkers wages and benefits to the bone in order to compete vs the emerging Chinese foreign car industry, and the US autoworkers will take it up their collective poop chutes, or their US plants will be shuttered, since they will have no unions, no fickle consumer support, no FAIR TRADE protection, and no collective bargaining power...

Flanders...you need to realize that, no matter what, being noncompetitive ultimately means you lose, and the converse being true as well.

No names of companies in particular but the ones that deserve praise are the ones that are still innovating. As opposed to jumping onto some trend, I'd be much more inclined to back the companies that really embody what America has always been good at and that's coming up with NEW ideas. We need to stay ahead of the curve again. Sure, we've invented a ton of great products only to see them improved and produced cheaper overseas- but then again, why don't we leap frog that by being truly inventive and innovative again.

Innovation is an American value & tradition that I think a lot of people have forgotten about or don't take pride in.

    1) Mac is not an industry, it is not even a company. It's a product line

    2) Apple's liberalism is clear from their actions, and far from a facade.

Ehh, Flanders, the Unions used to stick together and collectively shut off the money faucet to any business that didn't treat their own the way the unions thought they ought to be treated. At that time [[1946-1970) the unions had real power. After that the rank and file joined the "me first" generation and shopped price first, cutting their own brothers out of work to save a few bucks. It was OK when Joe lunchbucket was getting a good deal on sneakers, a television set or members only jacket.
Then it came around to the biggies--cars and trucks and now it's boo hoo.
