Default Chrysler to add 1,100 workers at Detroit plant

More good news on the automotive side. Say what one may about the auto bailouts but they look like a winner today for Detroit and metro D-W.

Chrysler said Thursday that it plans to add 1,100 jobs at its Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit, where it assembles the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

The Auburn Hills automaker also plans to begin assembling a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2013, when it plans to add the third shift.
The automaker, which saw its U.S. sales increase 26.2% in 2011 and is recovering faster than expected from its 2009 bankruptcy, said it hopes to play a key role in Detroit's resurgence.

The decision to add a third shift is welcomed in a city with a jobless rate of 17.1% in November.

"Our future, like the history of our brands, is interwoven with the city of Detroit," Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a statement.
