How do you feel about this new book? The quality of Julia Reyes Taubman's photography is very, very good. There is, however, very little text telling us about what she wanted to accomplish. It is also not balanced. It focuses almost exclusively upon Detroit ruins. In even the most troubled neighborhoods, there are well maintained homes and, in several areas, prosperous business. There is almost
no emphasis in this large book upon recent positive developments in Detroit such as the revived waterfront. You would never know that Marathon invested 2.1 billion in Detroit to produce petroleum from oil sands or the GM and Chrysler have invested substantially to expand production at their plants on the east side of Detroit.
This is a significant book but its interpretation is left to the viewer. Basically, it
illustrates the exceptional photographic and artistic skills of Julia Reyes Taubman.
