Detroit Hotels Fill Up

For all the naysayers who said on previous threads that Detroit didn't need new hotels, rooms would largly go unoccupied, etc. please read the attached article with some hopeful pleasure.

Recently my company had a trainer flown in from Oklahoma. There were a few events going on downtown including the ALCS and Monday Night Football.

There was ZERO hotel availability and our guest had to stay in Windsor.

This is fantastic news. Hotels are great sources of tax revenue, especially for hard-hit cities.

The only thing I'm wondering is what the count of available hotel rooms is. If the total count has gone down, then hitting full occupancy isn't as good of news as it sounds. I don't think it's likely, as it seems like the hotels that have closed have been counterbalanced with new hotels opening [[Ponchetrain closed, Book Cadillac Opened) but I don't know for sure.

I have to admit that I was a naysayer. I thought for sure that there would be a glut of empty hotel rooms after hearing of all the renovations over the past few years.

Since the comparison is for the past ten years mber of available hotel rooms has definitely gone UP. The Book the Pick Fort-Shelby, even properties by Metro!! Yea D

The article says that one of the reasons for this is that the economy is perking back up.

I can believe that. I'm noticing more help-wanted signs and new businesses setting up in formerly-vacant storefronts.

The latest is a store catering to medical marijuana growers. I happened to hear about it on the radio while I was in that neighborhood. I looked up and there it was! A free bag of dirt to the first five visitors that mention "Medical Mike"! I could have had one but what am I going to do with a freakin' bag of dirt? LOL!

granted it IS new year's eve, but my wife and i could NOT find a room at greektown, motorcity, mgm, marriot courtyard or marriot ren-cen or book. we really wanted to be near the people mover [[my daughter and i are going to the wings game) and she and her dad will be hitting a casino...

we ended up at the holiday inn express next to the book. i LIKE the HIE hotels but the last time i was in THAT particular building it was a run-down fleabag hotel under military contract and known as the mariner. that was my only reason it took me that long to decide looking into a room there...

I had major trouble finding a room downtown tonight...which is a good sign. I would love to get a room at the Book-Cadillac one day...once I level up from this whole starving artist label.

Kayak.com shows rooms available at the Holiday Inn Express, Ren Cen Mariott, St. Regis, Book-Cadillac, Roberts Riverwalk, Courtyard, Doubletree, and a few others for the 31st to the 1st.

That is the Westin. You can save $100 bucks or so. It's usually 120-160 a night on average on that site.

It will be interesting to see the effect on the downtown market when the Cobo renovations are completed. Might almost warrant this W hotel idea being mulled about for the David Whitney Building.
