Detroit— For local veterans and their families, Friday's opening of a residential center to house homeless veterans made Veterans Day that much special.

About 250 people attended the opening of the Detroit Veterans Housing Program on East Milwaukee in New Center.

The 22,000-square-feet center, built by Volunteers of America, will offer two years of transitional housing to 60 veterans at a given time.

There are about 3,000 to 5,000 homeless vets in the city alone, said Volunteers of America Michigan CEO Alex Brodrick.

"We open this facility today to fight this homelessness — this tragic result of war," Brodrick said of the $2.5 million center.

This is wonderful. I hope it includes counseling and substance abuse treatment for them. We failed the Vietnam era veterans badly when they came home. Thankfully there is now treatment for soldiers as they come home.
