I had an account at LaSalle [[BoA now?) in college but closed it in 2007. I've had an account with our local credit union since I was born and made it my primary when I left the bank.

We were considering switching to a credit union a few years ago. We decided to take out a car loan to test it out. The entire process was terrible - it was possibly the worst customer service I had ever experienced. We walked out without a loan. I think that branch has since gone out of business.

Anyone have a list of decent, local credit unions and/or banks to check out?

Try People's Trust [[the Federal Government worker's Credit Union).

Their main branch is in Southfield [[10 Mile and Lahser, next to Southfield High School) but they have branches in the Fisher Building and the McNamara building. Of course you can also use the CU Family Service Centers to do your banking for this particular Credit Union if you can't access these branches

Where are you? There are a lot of good CUs. People's Trust and Michigan First come to mind.

Yes, Michigan First [[Detroit Public School Teacher's Credit Union) is also good.

Their main branch is also in Southfield [[11 Mile and Evergreen), but they have a branch in the Detroit Public School building in the New Center Area, two on the Wayne State campus, a branch in Eastpointe [[8.5 mile and Gratiot) and several other branches in the suburbs.

Most local CU branches aren't open on weekends! I plan on switching in the near future, though.

The Family Service Centers are open on Saturdays, which are all over Detroit. No bank or Credit Union is open on Sunday.

That said, as for me, I grudgingly [[because of their betrayal to us in 2007) switched from BofA to Comerica. That's only because they have plenty of locations and ATMs in the city. I do have a Credit Union account, but I don't use it.

Well, I guess I already missed Bank Transfer Day, but that's good to know. I just looked up a bunch of CU branch hours on their websites, and concluded that whoever planned Bank Transfer Day for a Saturday clearly didn't live in Detroit.

christian financial cu....main branch in roseville. there's a branch in harper woods and chesterfield and several others.. theres also a service center on harper and 13. also comerica...never an issue with either of them.

TCF Bank is open 7 days a week; their lobbies are open Saturdays from 9-3 and Sundays from 11-3.

Most Flagstar Banks [[Including the one by WSU) are open Saturdays 10-4.

I stand corrected.

Most banks and Credit Unions aren't open on Sundays.

What are the major credit unions that have branches all over the state of michigan as well the country?

I don't carry much cash on me, so I don't want to be stranded without cash if there is not a nearby ATM from the credit union. The majority of my cash purchase is gas for the automobile.

Make sure your credit union is part of the coop network [[most are in Michigan). You can use any other coop network atm for free with no surcharge. Also, all the atms in 7-11's are free coop network atms......

You can also use any ATM but there may be a fee of $1 or $2. My CU is a member of the co-op network, but it seems none of the ones where I stay in FL are, so I am out of luck there and use Wells Fargo to get cash when I need it. I haven't tried 7-11, must give that a shot next time I'm in FL.

I am in the process of switching over. Opened a CU account last month and am making sure I transition all my online accounts properly. That'll take a month or so. Once everything gets switched over, ta-ta bank.

RE: JBMcB's crappy experience with a car loan -- Credit Union One in Ferndale treated me like a red-headed stepchild a few years ago over a car loan. Too long to detail here, but I'll never give then a dime of my business again after what they did.

Never since my days with the "Bank of Detroit" have I been with a bank. My C.U. of 21 years has gone from Truck and Coach to the new age "Genysis", whatever, I'll stick to a C.U.

Taking your account from a corporate bank to a socialist credit union is great ideal. It's a people's bank where you and you alone control your money. Less fees and more security. This will teach corporate banks a lesson! Let those corporate banks fail!

You mean Genisys Credit Union? ;-) T&C merged in 2008 with USA Credit Union, the result being named Genisys. GEN from T&C's affiliation with GENeral Motors and the ISYS part comes from Unisys, USA Credit Union's original membership field.

Beware, A lot of banks these days are charging a substantial fee for closing that account.
Case in point, Fifth Third Bank charged me $50.00 to close an account. My reason for closing was the high monthly fees. Then checking with my other two banks that I deal with only to find out they too have substantial closing fees.

I was amazed with the result of the campaign for Bank Transfer Day. Before, the Street reports that Occupy Wall Street is zeroing in on a unifying theme. The main focus is now “Bank Transfer Day,” where consumers can transfer their cash out of large banks in what would prove to be a more potent form of protest against the institution. Nov. 5 was chosen because it coincides with Guy Fawkes Day, a British anti-authoritarian holiday that was popularized in the U.S. by the feature film “V for Vendetta.”
