The federal government has charged another Detroit city official in a bribery and embezzlement scheme: Charlie Golden, the assistant superintendent of buildings.

According to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court today, Golden — who also is a reverend and owns the Perfecting Freedom Church — tried to obtain thousands of dollars worth of personal work for his church by fraudulently billing the city for it. He ran the scheme, the complaint said, by convincing a contractor who had deals with the city to fraudulently bill the city for thousands of dollars that were instead used to pay for repairs at Golden’s church.

But the contractor whose contracts were supervised by Golden reported the scam to authorities and became a cooperating witness in the case, according to the affidavit.

I work right next door to the New Center suite. We watched the Marshals taking pictures and removing hard drives from the computers healthcare company. It looks like they have the day off today.
