There's plenty of structures similar to that around New York City [[specifically Manhattan). That picture may just be from somewhere in New York.

I don't think Detroit will have to worry about seeing those things show up none too soon. I'm pretty sure part of the reason for those structures in places like New York City is the lack of open space for car parks [[environment's too dense). Since there's only a limited amount of space to park the cars at the surface, these structures tend to have elevators that lift the cars vertically to additional parking spaces. It's also to leave room for future development in the lots that have them [[easier to remove versus a parking garage) and it's a cheaper alternative to building parking garages as well.

A company in New York is actually bringing them back to Chicago. They're currently buying empty lots through out the city to build these car elevators. Pretty interesting.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned that the parking structure at the Holiday Inn Express and the Merchants Lofts also use elavators. The main elavator at the Science Center when it was constructed was also large enough to bring cars into it.

There used to be a parking system like this in Ann Arbor, probably in the mid-'70s.

Chicagoist makes a good guess, but is incorrect.

The building in the background kind of looks like the Jewelers building at 35 East Wacker, and it did have a car elevator, but I'm surprised they'd guess Wacker drive, when the street has only the river on the other side. The elevator wouldn't be on Wabash either since those buildings have been around for awhile leaving no vacant lot for this structure.

The location is actually 33 West Monroe. The building across the street still exists and is the BofA theater and a Hampton Inn. 33 West Monroe has a completion date of 1980 [[not sure if accurate). Something tells me this elevator was out of service and dismantled long before the 1970's
