Tour of Homes - Neighborhood Stabilization Showcase
East English Village Celebrates its Second Neighborhood Home Tour on October 9th

DETROIT, September 29, 2011-- East English Village [[EEV), the Detroit neighborhood bounded by Cadieux, East Outer Drive, Mack, and Harper on the city’s upper-east side, will host its second neighborhood home tour on Sunday, October 9th, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The tour will highlight foreclosed homes purchased by the Detroit Land Bank Authority [[DLBA) with Neighborhood Stabilization Program [[NSP) funds. The DLBA is investing in these properties for the purpose of maintaining the unique architectural details that have made EEV a neighborhood of choice for many years.

Mayor Dave Bing will announce the home tour on Friday, September 7th at 10:00 am at 4240 Kensington, the home of association president, William Barlage.

Attracting new residents to this Detroit neighborhood of choice is a key goal for the event. The diversity and live-ability of this community are aspects of the area that the tour points out for prospective residents. Other amenities - an active home-owner based community, good schools, quality restaurants and retail stores, specialty and general food and wine shops, and places of interest, and especially close in proximity to the beautiful Lake St. Clair and the metropolitan center are all assets of living in EEV.

EEV homeowner, Bill Bryson, can attest that home tours do attract new residents. He was looking for something to do that October day in 2009 when EEV held their first tour, saw the advertisement and showed up. “I turned to my girlfriend,” he smiles,” and said - we’re moving here!” The former North Corktown resident immediately started looking for a property in East English Village. He has been a resident for the last year and a half. “I was excited that we were doing this [home tour] again; it really works!”

The tour will offer a walk-through of four DLBA owned properties including one renovated home. Home décor showrooms such as Elegance by Design and Hagopian World of Rugs will furnish the main show house with urban chic home décor furnishing to demonstrate the design possibilities of the 1920s-1950s architecture.

Four occupied residences, well-loved and beautifully maintained, will serve as check-in and garden rest stops so that tour participants can meet current neighbors and enjoy light refreshments in their creative landscapes. By opening homes to visitors, these stops reveal the high quality and beauty of the neighborhood’s architecture and spirit. Courtesy of Nourison, an historic rug from the Kennedy White House will be on display.

The tour check-in will be located at 4240 Kensington. Shuttle buses will be available. For those interested in walking, biking or driving the three-quarter square mile neighborhood, a printed guide will direct visitors from house to house and provide other neighborhood information. A listing of homes for sale in the neighborhood and their prospective realtors will be included in tour materials so that individuals can arrange to view the properties after the tour day.

All activities are free to the public but registration is required. Register online at www.eastenglishvillage.org/tour or by phone at 313-216-1729.

The East English Village homeowners association presents this tour along with the Detroit Land Bank Authority [[DLBA) and Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative [[NDNI). The DLBA’s mission is to stabilize neighborhoods and stimulate economic growth through the acquisition, management and disposition of tax-reverted and acquired properties in cooperation with neighborhood stakeholders. DLBA is unmatched in its capacity to strengthen neighborhoods, and brings technical assistance for establishing neighborhood redevelopment. NDNI is a nonprofit organization working on short-term interventions to strengthen Detroit neighborhoods.
