For the last several months I have been featuring a Shorpy photograph on a blog each Saturday [[I have a missed a few weekends) I contribute to. I always enjoy these high quality views of the past. But as you seem to be on there a lot, more Detroit "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" if you know what I mean.

I created a folder titled "Shorpy" on my puter and copied all the Detroit-related shorpy photos to that file. Guess I'm up to near #50 already. From time to time I boot up the Windows Photo Gallery and browse through them for a delightful half hour or so.

Detroit circa 1908. “Automobile on waterfront road.” 8×10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company.

Some how that was more interesting than the photo.

For the automobile on the waterfront road photo I commented on another thread and on Shorpy that the location is on Belle Isle, just east of the bridge - the mainland [[Detroit) is in the background. The car is a 1906 Packard model S, also known as a model 24. The body style is known as a Runabout.

One more thing. Of the 738 1906 Packards built only 3 survive today.

Love the tramways on snowy Woodward. Also intriguing is the shot of Chop Suey Canyon. [[last one) The paper strewn on the ground reminds me of springtime when a lot of junk is left on the ground. Like the gents reading the papers on the sidewalk in front of Hotel Charlevoix.

Can someone please identify what the towers are that have four lights at the top? I can see at least 5 or 6 of them. I'd love to know what their purpose was!

They were called Moonlight Towers. I believe Detroit had more than a hundred of them all around the city. They were powered by acetylene gas and gave off a brilliant white light . We had them here from the mid-1880's until early 1900's. Many of the towers were sold to San Antonio where they are still in use with the exception that they are now electrified.

If you google moonlight towers you'll find a ton of better info.
