Dump the hipster garb. Wear business suits. Push baby strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, etc.

The issue here is image and the picture of hipster garbed anarchists getting maced doesn't stir the emotions in middle-class America. The reason I say this isn't because I am heartless to the plight of those maced, the reason is that the marchers look like they don't have anything else going on in their lives. We all know that there are some people who just like to complain and will join any random group who is protesting this or that.
Or dress like $3000 call girls, coke dealers, Lamborghini salesmen, and Miami Beach Realtor's, and have them notice that it will hit home soon.

A great quote from Glen Greenwald : A siginificant aspect of this progressive disdain is grounded in the belief that the only valid form of political activism is support for Democratic Party candidates, and a corresponding desire to undermine anything that distracts from that goal.

How'd voting for Nader work out in 2000? It's an imperfect system, but its the one we have. learn how to work it, or learn to love failure.

But, Oldredfordette, surely you see the point Gnome was making, the one which he went to the trouble to clarify.
You know that the nebulous group who we used to call the "white power structure" will, usually as their primary tactic, always employ every means available to them in an effort to "marginalize" the group[[s) causing the ruckus. [[Now, of course, they first check to see if there is any even remotely believable way of making the ruckussers out to be terrorists, so as to have free license to fully abridge their rights and make them eligible for a public stoning much different from the kind we used to pursue at shows like the one I saw at Cobo Arena where Yes played before the headliner, Black Sabbath... the main sacrilege, therein, being not so much generated by lyrics as by star-power. But, as always, I digress.)

It is simple common sense to not play right into the enemy's hands. It's not a betrayal of one's values. The emphasis should be on reaching the goal, and if that means a bit of sartorial sleight-of-hand, so be it.

Gnome is not echoing our parents. He is pointing out something that we should have learned, quite some time ago, from ourselves.

Lawrence O' Donnell is pretty cheesed off about it. Is he a middle class American?

These look like regular people to me by the way, so I guess I don't know what qualifies as a "hipster garbed anarchist" these days.

That's great! A socialist takeover of Wall Street. I can see the second American Revolution begin.

Mainstream America doesn't care about progressive anarchists who go around causing mischief.

Though on the bright side, it does free up your job prospects because most employers will not hire these type of people once they do a background check and find they have been arrested.

Anarchists? The first amendment guarantees the right to assemble.

These people are on the front line on behalf of mainstream America, who will benefit from any changes that might come about thanks to their efforts. If anything, mainstream America should be grateful.

This bug has been discussed here before. I believe we've tracked it down to a wordwrap rendering bug in Internet Explorer. The word is not repeated in the HTML source of the webpage yet IE displays it wrong. It's not DYes.

    Yea, Microsoft!

The Occupy Wall Street protesters are now being backed by two labor unions -- the New York Transit Workers Union and the International Workers of the World are both endorsing the protests.

The NY Transit Workers Union will join the protest at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

Having the Wobblies on your side doesn't do anything to support the "we're middle America" theme that some are trying to put forth. Dressing up as middle America won't cut it either.

Get a sizable cross section of middle America out on the streets and people will take notice. Get a 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 of the population to express membership in or support of the Occupy Wall Street group and it will be a force to be reckoned with [[though it would help if the aims of the protestors weren't' so varied and at times contradictory). If Democratic candidates, in large numbers, proclaim membership in or support of the Occupy Wall Street group, and are elected in large numbers in 2012 then there'll be no denying the importance of the protests this month.

But if the protests draw fewer people than a single Verizon store will draw upon release of the iPhone5, don't be surprised if mainstream America never pays any attention to the OWS protest movement.

Default Occupy Wall Street Protesters Maced / Pepper Sprayed by NYPD Police

In the first video, keep your eye on this elderly unhipster. She sees what's going down, then instead of running away, charges directly into the fray. She first appears at 0:14 to the far left of frame.

In a military situation few would deny her heroism.

I am puzzled as to why the crowd's venom is not directed at the members of Congress who continue to legislate the bankers' agendas starting with anyone who voted for Bush's Wall Street bailout, NAFTA type agreements, and devaluing the dollar.

Great thread everyone. Gnome, you have the best post thus far!! You summed it up perfectly.

Typical pussy cop who sprays mace and then runs away. The protesters sure weren't bein violent in their demonstrations. But hey, the rich need to be protected right?

Fuck'em! I really hope the protests spread to every large city in the USA. It should make the hippy 60s look like childs play because what we need to fight for affects everyone [[while the protests to Viet Nam were in response to univerisity kids IE: upper middle-class white kids, being drafted).

I have no problem with people making money but the problme is now these cunts are making money off the back so eliminating jobs when they don't have to. There greed knows no bounds!

TAKE BACK THE USA and show the world Americans! Voting isn't and hasn't done shit. It is now time to take to the streets!

    Solid planning.

Do you mean the white haired lady that wasn't maced by the police ? The one on the far left who had the cop next to her? You don't see that is exactly what I was talking about? Look respectable and you will confuse your opponent.

    Be the fish.

Image a thousand people just like her.

You guys do know that Obama and the Dems received the Lion's share of Wall Street campaign dough, right? Goldman Sachs people were the second highest contributors to Mr. Obama's coffers.

You might want to balance your blame throwing a bit.

Just a reminder to ask everyone to please sign the petition advocating a Constitutional amendment to get money out of politics. Here is the draft of the amendment:

"No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, campaign contributions to candidates for Federal office shall not constitute speech of any kind as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Congress shall set forth a federal holiday for the purposes of voting for candidates for Federal office."

    Sign it here: http://www.getmoneyout.com/?recruiter_id=22678

The petition was started by Dylan Ratigan, who is a host on MSNBC; he intends to use his show as a platform to force this issue in the 2012 elections. They're now up to 64,000 signatures.
