Default Ren Cen to get little bit brighter

    http://www.freep.com/article/2011092...uminate-RenCen

General Motors is working with the City of Detroit to allow it to put more such LED bands of lighting on its RenCen world headquarters. The company would like to install vertical bands of lighting on the exterior elevator towers of the RenCen. And it wants the city's permission to relax its signage code so that GM could display a more varied menu of messages on the 25-foot sign high atop the RenCen's central tower.

I hope it doesn't look too tacky. A more vibrant and lit up skyline is indicative of a livelier downtown.

Agreed. A lot of buildings need better lighting, but it needs to be tasteful.

With the lights they've recently added it's already verging on tacky. Leave the stupid Pink Floyd Atari light show to Motor City Casino.

I don't know. I kinda like the lights added to the top of each of the towers. A vertical stripe might not be that bad, and if I recall the change in signage code is to allow them to display logos of local sports teams on the days of events.

Some would argue, myself included, that the RenCen was always considered gaudy. So why stop now? I say light it up. Detroit and GM in particular could use a little glitz. This ain't the Guardian or the Fisher.

I would imagine the original designers are puking in their mouth at the thought of the building looking like a ghetto party store [[led, color changing signs seem to be the new thing).
On the other hand the lights they have up there are pretty cool. I've always been a fan of anything illuminated but could see where some might consider it gawdy.

I like the lights with on exception. I think the rotating-company-logo one is really tacky. You can't even tell what it is, even from Campus Martius. I don't mind more lights, but keep the square-logo one just as a pulsating GM logo.
