Default Horrible Violence in Detroit Today

Per WDIV, 15 people have been shot and three are dead in the last 12-24 hours in the city. Nine different crime scenes mostly on the east side.

This has been an unbelievably violent year.

Sounds like Chicago or New York or Philly or Oakland.

    Situation normal.

Don't like it? Blame the Supreme Court and their policy on striking down gun control laws.

So wait, the fire house incident is had 2 shootings nearby? Were the other shootings from random spots around town or in the same area?

Normal or not, it's still a tragedy, a sin and a shame. It's sad but here in the United States, we've grown very used to people killing each other. What will it take for us to step back and say to ourselves that this is neither normal nor feasible?

yeah, cause what do you think the odds are that the guns used in these shooting were legal registered guns?

always wondered why people want to disarm innocent and law abiding citizens....

They had to come from somewhere. If they weren't manufactured or available for sale initially, they couldn't be stolen or blackmarketed.

Do you know for a fact that all 15 shootings are not random?

The media reports are not very specific.

Not to pour salt on an open would, but even city residents can't help to make it better.

With all due respect, no, this is not just like Chicago, NYC, Philly, or Oakland

From the 2010 Uniform Crime Reports
    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr...4/table-4/view

    Detroit Population 713,777 Murders 310
    Oakland 390,724 90
    Chicago 2,695,598 432
    New York 8,175,133 536
    Philadelphia 1,526,006 306

Sure looks to me like the average resident of Detroit has a way higher chance of being murdered than the residents of the other cities mentioned. It doesn't do anyone any good to close our eyes and chant, "It's just as bad in other places".

Now, as far as the second point goes, I'm not an NRA member, or even an NRA sympathizer, and I believe some kinds of gun control could be good, but to the extent the murders are a result of gang violence, what earthly good would gun control do? Did the gangs of the 20's and 30's worry that Thompsons were illegal? Would today's gangs let gun control stop them? Yes, making guns harder to get would make the "person gets pissed off at his/her spouse, kid, parent, neighbor, random stranger" or "person mistakes spouse or kid for an intruder" type of killing less likely, but really, how prevalent are these last types compared with gang killings in Detroit? And the question is still open as to why Detroit is so much more violent than other cities.

Just how much does having a depression-level economy figure into these types of crime statistics? Is it the main culprit?

Doesn't help, but it's not the main cause. Even when times were good the murder rate in Detroit was astronomically bad. The problem is the over abundance of low life, POS bottom feeders that have no respect for the law, or for the well being of others. You can go into rural areas in Northern Michigan and find many people living in similar economic situations to those in Detroit. Yet amazingly enough they manage to get by without killing each other on a near daily basis.

The police in the Netherlands complained this week that the number of shooting incidents, meaning where police had to use guns capturing criminals, is rising yearly.

    These figures are real!!

    In 2006: 14.
    In 2010: 25.

Shooting incidents in a whole year!!!

Yes, that little country on the eastern board of the North Sea with almost 17 million inhabitants, with it's relaxed drug policy, is quite dangerous......

And they dare calling us the boogyman when it concerns drugs.

    Murder statistics:
    2005; 201
    2006: 149
    2007: 143
    2008: 159
    2009: 178
    2010: 170

Again, that's in a population of 16.5 to 17 million people.

There is no outrage in Detroit over what is going on. Ralph Godbee has no control over his department, not enough soldiers to go out and get these thugs and drug dealers off the streets.

He's right when he says the following:

"Detroit, we failed miserably. This is our fault."

"Black men in our community, what the hell is wrong with us?"

"If these were white men coming into our community from Oakland county and killing all our people, would we be outraged enough to stand up and do anything?"

"We see African American men killing African American men in our community every day, and it's almost as if we expect that here."

It's expected, it's accepted, it's ignored, it's a part of everyday life in Detroit. God help you in Detroit and God help the suburbs because it's already moving here.

Of course not it is no excuse, but this economy and the massive inequality of wealth and income creates anger and resentment in people that helps breed violent crime.

Sometimes the anger and resentment is so subtle you don't realize it is happening until something happens that sets it off.

Also I bet there is some drug gang warring going on in the community. In the past huge spikes in the murder rate was usually caused by that, for I believe there are few random events.

All the officers probably were assigned to the Kid Rock concert and Lion's game...

Crime is not going to go down until Detroit have Judge's at 36th District and Circuit court who want to do their job and not put everyone on top secret probation. Remember you vote them into office!!!
